Hello everyone,

I have been having doubts about my study choice, not about the field but where and exactly what I am studying.

I am currently studying my first year at CPUT ICT. This is a three year diploma (assuming technical). What is actually the difference if I would study a Bsc at UCT of computer sciences instead.

I did not manage to get into UCT for the years intake (I also applied late) but would my marks in this diploma course help me to enter? I am currently averaging about 75% in this first term, I have the subjects Business economics (80%), Multimedia (67%), Networking (74%), programming (83%) and Applications Development (76%).

My school marks were not great though, I dropped about 15% in my finals in maths, 76% to 69% end. Near all my 8 subjects were in the high 60's with the exception of accounting (74%) and physical science (56%). I did the IEB curriculum.
My NBT scores were 83, 91 and 74.

So my question is, is it worth it to try and swap to UCT and do a Bsc I stead? Would I need to, e.g. redo maths and physics through unisa, or is my first year diploma marks enough or should I also do second year? Not really worried about repeating content and I am only turning 19 now, so did rather swap now rather than regretting it for the rest of my life.

Thank you, this has been plaguing me.
J.

Aplogies for spelling errors or random strange words, I am typing from my phone.

I doubt you will get any credit for your first year diploma, if you change to a BSc degree. The diploma is more focused on application of technology, degree is more theoretical. So if you change to a degree, you would have to start from first year. As for the entrance requirements, you would have to speak to someone in the UCT BSc faculty.

Regardless of your choice to switch to a university, would you really want to go to UCT of all places? They are still protesting and who knows what those students will do next.

The OP will only be able to apply for next year. Also, students are always protesting about something. Every year there are protests about NSFAS funding, this year those protests are over shadowed by the statue issue. Things should stabilise by next year, relatively speaking.

Or OP could just apply to Stellenbosch

Any university that will take him for a BSc :D

Try Europe :)

You might get credit for your programming modules.

Thank you

I was there on Friday again, the issues don't seem to affect classes.

My afrikaans is horrendous :D
No, the reason for UCT is that I live close enough, do not have to apply for residence.

Could anyone clarify the major differences between Bsc and a Tech degree, also how it would help in a job?

Thanks.

EDIT: Okay, I know the major differences. Going to apply for next year Bsc and F it if I don't make it, will continue with Diploma > B.Tech.
