Not sure this is in the right thread

Did you know - if you send yourself a mail in GMAIL to GMAIL and you then put that mail in a folder (Label) and then go and delete the sent mail - it deletes it from where you stored it in the Label.....

That's bloody stupid!

Probably, but there's no real need to delete the sent mail. It does warn you beforehand that you're deleting an entire conversation.

Why on earth are you sending yourself emails in GMail to Gmail - and then deleting them?

Because that's how i keep stuff, i have a work folder - useful things i keep for work etc etc

But i noticed that a document i use quite alot - has vanished...then i did a test - why is it linked??? its bloody stupid, what i send and what i store are 2 different things. It can delete the sent item but not the email that i have stored away in a folder.

Outlook doesn't do that?

open the email.

it normally displays all mail in conversation.

sellect the one you wish to delete, then delete.

if you delete in mail list view it will take all in the convo.

Ohhhh - OK, I see the issue. I also use Gmail for storing interim drafts, working docs, etc. But as saor says, "Why delete?" Been using Gmail for almost ten years, still only half full and the only stuff I delete is things I really do not need. I get and send quite a lot of emails - many of them over 5Mb.

That's because outlook uses different folders. In Gmail it's just a label. A sticker. The only folders gmail has are inbox and sent.

That's why it's called a label, it's not actually a folder like in outlook. An email can have more than one label applied to it, that's why you can see the same email in Sent Mail and All Mail. If you delete the email, it will be deleted from all labels.

The mail might still be in the "Bin" aka deleted items.

If Gmail was a girl, would you still email yourself and then delete it... with a girl?

You can turn off conversation view under settings. A lable is also NOT a folder. Labels are much better because you can have one mail under two labels. Whereas with a folder you'll have to send yourself the mail again to duplicate it.

Except Send items and All Mail are not lables...
