Sub R3000 / cheaper phones

I'm sure there was a thread for something like this?

Currently looking at Xiaomi Redmi 6A 16GB (R1500) or the Huawei Y5 Prime 16GB (R2000). Any thoughts on quality differences or suggestions for another decent phone in this price range? Camera probably most important but not really too bothered, beyond that it's just for the usual forums, internet, chat etc. No gaming.
 
Xiaomi S2 from takealot. Think they're around R2600 now.

No more bloatware than most manufacturers I'm sure. I can't say the bloatware bothers me at all - it's not crowding up my storage or anything, but you're right about the updates though. It's less than playstore updates and I just let them run when I'm on WiFi, like I would any other updates. As fo being filled with advertising, nah. There might be some in the bloatware, but I really haven't noticed. Maybe because I don't use many xiaomi apps. I just stick the bloatware in a folder and ignore it. I could probably uninstall most of it. I haven't tried because it's not an issue for me.
 
Y5 is one year old and price is the same as on the launch. Y6 was only for R400 extra. I do own Y6 2018, so I do expect Y5 to be a good phone. However it is 2019 and two new budget phones had been released since.

The new Y6 2019 looks very competetive. More ROM, the latest SoC and fingerprint sensor. Camera is very basic, but it has f/1.8 aperture which is important when shoting in low light. These are important changes. The other is a practical one: now you can listen to FM radio over Bluetooth, as FM antenna is built in.

Y7 2019 is better, but maybe not matching exactly your needs. If you are heavy user, then YES, as it has a hudge battery, but price is around R4000. See a review here: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/huawei-y7-2019.1011372/

The ulefone power 3s is 2999 probably the best one during loadshedding

Ended up going with the Xiaomi Mi A2 lite. Dual sim and hardly any bloatware, just a few extra apps that needed uninstalling. Am aware it cost a little bit more than the proposed budget of this thread.
 
Eh, I was also kinda preparing to complain about takealot today and actually - it all went smooth. Placed the order at around 10:30 this morning, got the collection email at around 12:30, went in, signed in, went to airport lounge and in a few minutes my name was up on the display.

Huawei has no bloatware, just a small pack of very useful Huawei apps you can uninstall if you don't like it. And all current Y-series phones have dual SIM sockets, SD card do not take any SIM socket, they are true dual SIM phones.

For what other reason did you decide for Xiaomi?

Probably less spying chips on the Xiaomi in comparison to Huawei phones :D

Well, where you get such things? Huawei is under constant attacks from CIA/MOSAD, mass-media smearing campain was deployed for number of months and they didn't bring any proof. On the other side there is a long history and plenty of evidence that CIA/MOSAD are spying on you.

Needed a phone stat.

Looked decent on gsmcompare, skimmed a few xda-developers threads, a few reddit threads and took the sum of that info and made a yes/no call. There was nothing specific. More sentiment maybe. Some of the official flashing tools from xiaomi look interesting. Also something about android upgrades for at least the next two years due to some program they've got that might have a cool-sounding name? The quick charge on the battery is very nice.

edit: the camera does suck tho.

Once it is clear, please tell us what do you expect from Huawei?
Junk phones? Go elsewhere.

Vodacom offer Y6 2019 R199p/m. It is not good, as Telkom has Y7 2019 on FreeMe 500MB for the same price. But a cash price beats others, asking R2699. https://vodacom4u.co.za/product/huawei-y6-2019/

It is a very new phone and network providers didn't update their Websites, including Telkom. If you go to the shop, you will perhaps find it.
