Sub R3000 / cheaper phones

Once it is clear, please tell us what do you expect from Huawei?
Vodacom offer Y6 2019 R199p/m. It is not good, as Telkom has Y7 2019 on FreeMe 500MB for the same price. But a cash price beats others, asking R2699. https://vodacom4u.co.za/product/huawei-y6-2019/
Here I am back again -- after wandering up and down around the [virtual] World
Where I learned a bit

Vodascum and MnotN ONLY offer SINGLE SIM phones and do other nasty blocking things
It is very hard to find a [brick and mortar] store that sells ONLY handsets and not with a contract
Very few salespeople actually know their merchandise or offerings ( or care less )

SO
Mr "HUAWEI" what do you suggest ?
I need Dual Sim and discrete memory card
( camera etc etc not too important -- but I of course would like to get as much as I can for as little as possible )
Staying away from Samsung and Xiaomi
Seeing as I am a "bottom-feeder" I will most likely buy used / demo / special offer
Had a look at the
Y3 -- entry level but price is good and on special ( EVERYONE seems to only have GOLD -- NO Black anywhere )
Y5 Prime 2018 -- also good price / last years model
Then
Y6 -- 2019
Y7 -- 2019
Starting to move out of my price range

What about the HONOR range ? ( 8A perhaps ? )

What is the best bang for the buck OLD ( cheap ) model ?

Last night my 4 year old Huawei ascend G7 decided it didnt want to charge anymore. Not sure if its the battery, connector or just fubar so will be taking it in to have a bit of tlc at the local repair shop. This led me to have a look at the available phones. Not really anything that makes me jump for joy, but was looking at the Y7, just wish it was closer to the overseas pricing. 150 euro does not equal nearly 4k ronts.

I agree. However Huawei don't want to sell Y7 in high volume. The release sequence is pushing you towards more expensive phones. Maybe exception are Y7/Y6, but Y7 price doesn't look attractive comparing to P Smart and Y6 version selling by Telkom (Pro) do not have a fingerpring sensor.

Once P30 Lite came out, it is clear that Huawei want you to up the standards (meaning to buy more expensive phones.) There are probably the best contract deals for this phone.

The last year I was excited by Y3 for R999, now is R1600?? It was better than Nokia 1, but not anymore. Maybe Samsung A30/50 will adjust Huawei pricing policy.

There is apparently a difference in the version of the Y3 ( a version I and a version II )

Ackermans have the version I Y3 for R999.00

Ackermans and Foschini have the BEST deals on handsets

Foschini Cellular

Ackermans Cellular

As far as I know ONLY phones from Telkom are DUAL Sim !

Why wouldn’t you rather buy the cheaper (but similar spec) P Smart 2019 if on a budget?
There is no use ever having a rational discussion with sajunky, he literally goes on racist free rants

For these cheaper phones the deals would constantly change as very supply driven in regards to price, plus usually very little support.

Nokia should release new phones at this price bracket soon I think, due a refresh.

Plus thread is sub R3k which is a completely different category to sub 1.5k

Good to see Huawei Y3 2018 @R999 again. Ackermans has a latest version Y3 2018. Version II was 2016, very old, then was a 2017 version.

Y3 2018 is important as it has a modern Android version Oreo Go. Same as Nokia 1 and Vodacom Kicka 4.

Year 2018 was important for low cost phones.

Do you suggest then that I go for the Ackermans offer ?
I know that there IS a Dual Sim version -- one wonders if they have it ?

They are similar specs, both are Kirin 710, 3GB vs 4GB ram is not that great a difference, similar radio, similar screens...
But but Dave, you're a troll! /s
Sajunky, stop trolling. It's good that you're posting links to deals, but they're not really in the range of this thread, you should start another thread titled. Ultra cheap phones under 1.5k.

And as Dave said, if you're buying this low, then you definitely will not stretch your budget over 20/30% higher for a measly upgrade.

Yes, it is a good phone. I was going to get it prepaid, but went with a contract with Y6 2018 instead.

They usually offer phones with a prepaid SIM. The one from Cell C or Telkom should be dual SIM. It is also written on the box whether dual or a single SIM.

I'm sure there was a thread for something like this?

Currently looking at Xiaomi Redmi 6A 16GB (R1500) or the Huawei Y5 Prime 16GB (R2000). Any thoughts on quality differences or suggestions for another decent phone in this price range? Camera probably most important but not really too bothered, beyond that it's just for the usual forums, internet, chat etc. No gaming.

Coming back to this thread in light of developments with US and China
One cannot talk about events in China and then be a hypocrite and support Chinese manufacturers

How many ( IF any ) mobile phones are NOT made in China ?

I can quickly think of ....

Samsung - South Korea
Sony -- Japan

How many others are there ?

Out of the others what is the best offering they have in this price range ?
Most reviews seem to concentrate on a few well known brands and much of the rest of the market is not mentioned !

Trying to decide between Xiaomi Mi A2 lite 32GB and Samsung A10, very similar. Will Xiaomi also suffer from Trump-China shenanigans?

No. America wants to screw Huawei out of 5g. It's nothing to do with the phones really. Xiaomi should be safe.
