Certain callers intermittently receive an error message when they try to call me - "The subscriber you have called does not exist". This problem occurs across all service providers including Telkom but mostly occurs with Cell C network callers.

MTN have been advised of this problem over the past months but either refuse to fix the error or just don't know how to do so. This is my business phone and I cannot afford this service interruption.

I am using MTN because I am on Afrihost and enjoy their service, but perhaps I just need to port. Can anyone offer me an solution with this?

Last week I once again received this error message. I called Afrihost as I use their sim card and pay them for services. They told me that there is nothing that they can do and that I must call MTN. I told them that its their problem as I pay them for their services. Still waiting for a call back.

I suspect that this is all to do with number porting and that the porting table on the Vodacom side is intermittently faulty.
I don't really care where the problem lies, I just want it to go away. I think I will just get a new sim card and no from Vodacom and go from there.

Any ideas?

Hi. Yes, I did port from Vodacom.

It looks like MTN has problems with their porting database, or a similar related issue as the problem is intermittent. Depending on how the calls are routed into MTN you either receive the call or the caller gets a "The subscriber you have called does not exist" message.

They've know about the problem for a few months. From the last paragraph you know what to do.

If you are interested in porting to Advinne, PM your details to me and I'll send a SIM card to you. While the Advinne pricing is not identical to Afrihost, the Mzanzi_199 offers 1GB data and 160 minutes, which is more than the equivalent on Afrihost and maybe you will be happier :D.

I suspect the problem here lies at the Vodacom end.
Have you noticed how when you call a number that has ported from Vodacom, you first hear the 3 short beeps before it starts ringing?
It's as if those calls first go to Vodacom, and then get routed where they need to go.

The OP needs to log a request with MTN (they are now his provider so it has to be logged with them, and not Vodacom) to have his routing table updated.

Agreed, OP is paying MTN for the service, they need to resolve it.

We've had MNP for 10 years now, why are the mobile operators still not able to get it right?

Dont know. It does not always happen though. Seems sometimes when a number ports out something just goes pear shaped on the backend.

But who do we actually ask?
The contact centre?

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions.

I called MTN head office yesterday and spoke to a manger who promised me a call back within 2 hours. This of course never happened. I called again today and asked to talk to the MD, which I never expect to actually reach, but this may inspire someone to actually help me.

Send me a PM.

I'll get it sorted for you.

I'll be at the pc 6:30pm

Hi All

Has this problem been sorted? I am having the exact same problems, ported from Vodacom to Afrihost and getting this issue. MTN porting department says they sent a request to fix the routing table and that there are no issues on that side so they are getting their networking guys to look into it.

Problem for me is there is no ETA on when this problem will be fixed and I have already been struggling for 2 weeks.

Hi Kyle

I wouldn't begin to know how to fix the issue you are having, BUT I might have some contacts that I'm busy trying to get hold of regarding the matter, will let you know ASAP.

Hi all,

I have the exact same problem. I've had the same Vodacom number for 10+ years. I recently ported to an MTN contract but now Vodacom numbers can't get through to me...they're confronted with the "number dialed does not exist" recording.. All other service provider numbers (well...ones tested) can get through.

Is there a solution to this problem? Any advice/help will be much appreciated...

Had this problem, first tried a SIM reset through 808 that did not work then did a sim swop which did the trick
