Suggestions for R180k hatchback

The i10, Brio, Picanto etc are in a lower segment than the Clio in any case. You have to compare the Clio with the Rio, i20 and Jazz.
I'm comparing it on his requirements - 2017+ for around R180k...

The Suzuki Swift simply does not cut in auto transmission.

I would suggest a Mazda 2 or a Honda Jazz.

Maybe I'm ignorant or brainwashed, but why would anybody buy a Chinese car. That's a lot of money to make a mistake with...

Value for money? The M4 which is now the Haval H1 made it to the top 10 of best selling compact SUVs in May, in March it was in the top six, with the Juke way behind at no 10, makes you think, doesn't it?

Seems like more people are starting to look at what is on offer instead of the badge. Established manufacturers are sleeping on the job while Haval is busy, more dealerships are springing up everywhere and the products are of acceptable quality, but I doubt anything will convince you if you still looking at cars that way.

Steed is also in the top ten of the best selling bakkie.

I'd rather buy a well-known hatchback than a Chinese SUV.

Brand new Sandero Expression at R171900, since you even considered a Datsun this is far much superior car at a not too bad price. For perspective, it is is more specced than an entry level Hundai i20 which is priced at over R200k.

I was in the same boat, then I opted for a 2011 Mercedes-Benz B200 for the extra space. It was a CPO so I thought I'd have peace of mind but it's been longer at their workshop than me owning it.

Just goes to show that a name brand (even if certified pre owned) does not mean much, but at least Mercedes takes care of it by offering a decent courtesy car while they fix whatever complaints I have.

Thank you all for the responses. They were very helpful.
Manual cars will not be considered. The reason for the year/s? The peace of mind that a warranty and service plan brings. The car will never be used for dicing and it won't be taken to the Kyalami race course any time soon. Fuel consumption is important, so is the ability to park in tight spots so no sedans will be considered.

This will be a busy weekend!

And yes, cars older than 2017 can be looked at too. So long as adding extended warranty and service plan leads to the cost not exceeding the R180k mark. Also things like replacing belts, shock absorbers, etc are a concern so that's why older cars were not considered. Peace of mind and all that.

P.S. after reading a few threads here, I've removed the Datsun Go from the list.

You could also add the Jazz to the list but the auto is a CVT.

I owned a Jazz CVT for twelve years and did 167,000km.
For the application as stated by the OP it's perfect.

Many reviews bitch about the 'slipping clutch' effect when you floor the accelerator but this can be remarkably lessened if you do a bit of manual shifting and juggle the accelerator pedal.
