Hey all.

The requirements are: new, demo or 2017 models - hatchbacks. It must be an automatic. It will be used for daily commute to/from work and some shopping. Buyer is single with no kids. They spend 90% of the time in their car either alone or with their partner so rear leg room is of no concern. Only once in a while they have a passenger or 2 sit at the back.

Cars to consider:
Ford Ecosport 1.5 Titanium
Hyundai i10 Grand
Hyundai i20 1.4 Motion
Datsun Go 1.2 Lux (cheapest on the list and I've read negative reviews)

Anything else to add to that list? No test drives or physical viewing of any car have been conducted. Vehicle will be bought cash and warranty + maintenance plan would be great if included.

For that price and either new or demo and automatic, slim pickings.

I would suggest the Suzuki Swift but the auto is horrible. Manual fits your budget.

Only other auto hatch I can think off I this price range is the Kia Picanto....if you can find a demo.

EDIT: I missed the 2017 part. Look for a Mazda 2. Dynamic spec is a very nice car.

You could also add the Jazz to the list but the auto is a CVT.

With that budget you are limiting yourself from getting a good car by only looking at demos and year olds , maybe get a 2016 model

Don't even try the Suzuki , it's a bloody horrible car to drive.

I went for a last second day trip to Durban 3 weeks ago and you guys here always diss the etios and favour these types of cars, so I figured let me give it a try . Worst car ever (manual box) !

Of course OP, you need to go and test drive each car yourself.

I would really suggest a KIA Rio. I bought my parents an auto used. It came with tons of bells and whistles. and even if you get a 2016, the fact that they have one of the longest factory warranty's means you could still get 5 yrs of warranty going forward.

I reckon you are in the minority here, but we'll agree to disagree.

This. Forget about almost new and just buy a propper car.

Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Ciaz, VW Up, Honda Jazz, Honda Ballade, Opel Corsa, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, Renault Clio, Renault Captur, Renault Duster. Mazda2 & 3. Test drive each and everyone and go for the one you like and that suits your needs. Do some research. Everyone will have their positive and negative experience of each brand or models.

Ford Fiesta 1.0 T Powershift / Auto.
Bought the manual (Trend spec) in Jan 2017 for son's commute to university.
A colleague has the same engine (with auto) in a 2016 Ford Focus.

This, for example:

Have you driven that auto? It's frustrating...
Yep. It's still a heck of a lot better than any of the single-clutch options you're going to get in this price segment, and is just fine for daily commuting. And 88kw is nothing to sneeze at for the price.

For clarity, I've driven the i10, Brio and Picanto autos too back when I was looking for a cheap daily commute. They're down on power and their transmissions worse. You have to plant your foot flat just to keep up with traffic...

Well, I test drove that Clio with my wife (and I owned the auto in the form of the Kadjar) and she went with the Mazda. The only thing the Clio has going for it over the Mazda 2 is the external looks...maybe.

The i10, Brio, Picanto etc are in a lower segment than the Clio in any case. You have to compare the Clio with the Rio, i20 and Jazz.
