Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed as the new coach of Mexico.

"It's unanimous. Eriksson has been accepted," said Guadalajara president and member of the Mexican federation's executive committee Jorge Vergara.

Sacked as manager of Manchester City on Monday, the 60-year-old former England coach has agreed a two-year deal.

"Mexico is a big job," said Eriksson. "To help Mexico reach the World Cup is a big challenge. You have 120 million people and it's motivating."

The decision to name Eriksson as Hugo Sanchez's successor was taken at a meeting of the 18 owners of the country's first division.

Eriksson was the only serious contender for the Mexico job, which has been vacant since Sanchez left in March.

The Swede spent five-and-a-half years in charge of England, from January 2001 until July 2006, taking them to two World Cup quarter-finals.

Mexico are looking for a manager to take them to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Eriksson will not officially take up his post until 21 June, when Mexico host Belize Monterrey in the second leg of the second round of World Cup qualifiers.

Until then caretaker coach Jesus Ramirez will remain in temporary charge for the matches against Argentina on 4 June, Peru on 8 June and the first leg with Belize in Houston on 15 June.

Eriksson is Mexico's first foreign coach since Serbian Bora Milutinovic, who resigned in 1997 from his second stint in charge of the team.

Apart from Milutinovic, Mexico has had two Spaniards, two Hungarians and an Englishman as coaches.

Eriksson's season-long stint at City was officially brought to an end on Monday by the club's owner Thaksin Shinawatra, following weeks of speculation.

BBC Sport revealed in April that Eriksson was no longer wanted by owner Thaksin, despite City finishing ninth in the Premiership.

Cristiano Ronaldo has told his agent, Jorge Mendes, that he wants to leave Manchester United to fulfil his "dream" of playing for Real Madrid.

The Portugal international's wishes have been made clear to the Spanish giants and their president, Ramon Calderon, will now move forward with his plan to try to bring the world's most coveted footballer to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo will be offered a deal worth £150,000 per week after tax, a contract that he feels is too good to refuse, but as well as fulfilling his financial demands, he has informed his closest advisers that the chance of playing for such a prestigious club is one he does not want to miss out on.

On Saturday, the double Footballer of the Year said that he would announce his decision regarding his one-off move to Madrid "in two or three days", however, it is now believed he will not talk to the world's media before Friday at the earliest.

It is understood that one of his associates has told Portuguese journalists that he as made up his mind to leave United and that he hopes the club will back down on the previously hardline approach that they have adopted to his world-record transfer to the Spanish champions.

This latest twist will only serve to further damage relations between the two clubs, which are already at breaking point after weeks of rumours and leaks emanating from the Spanish capital.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be furious about this latest development, but until the player comes out publicly to deny he wants to leave Old Trafford, which he has repeatedly refused to do, the speculation will continue, with the feeling growing that he does after all wish to depart the Premier League and European champions for pastures new.

It is believed that his compatriot Mendes and Madrid are working on a strategy to overcome United's present resistance, however, seeing how the latter have already threatened to report their Spanish counterparts to football's world governing body, Fifa, while Ferguson has revealed how the Glazer family would rather let the player rot in the reserves than sell him to their rivals, that may well prove problematical.

Ferguson will not, though, as has been suggested in recent weeks, make a personal trip to Portugal's Euro 2008 training camp in Switzerland to persuade the player to remain at the 'Theatre of Dreams', like he did in 1996 with Eric Cantona, preferring instead to go on his summer holiday to the South of France and leave the matter in the hands of chief executive David Gill.

where do you mention chelsea here :)

aggg shame if you want to always have a go at united, by all means man :)

Reason why i didnt mention Chelsea was purely for the fact that the saga between Real and Ronaldo, now Robinho has been questioned. Real Madrid took the proper steps to disipline the player for talking out.

United dont! Thats the point!

Their "striker" if you can call him that, rooney has had a record 12 goals this season in the EPL.Without Ronaldo they f*cked.

Roma's highly-rated young coach Luciano Spalletti has emerged as the favourite to succeed Avram Grant as the next Chelsea manager after the club failed to persuade AC Milan's Carlo Ancelotti to take over at Stamford Bridge.

It was thought that the Champions League and Premier League runners-up would announce Ancelotti as their new coach yesterday, but the Italian called those reports "fantasy football", going on to add: "I don't want to move from AC Milan. It is my home and I have had no contact with other clubs over the past few days."

As a result, Roman Abramovich has moved his attention towards Serie A's 2006 Coach of the Year, according to sources close to the west London club.

Spalletti, 49, is said to have gained admirers at Stamford Bridge over the way he has turned the capital club around since joining from Udinese three years ago, with Roma taking eventual champions Inter Milan down to the final round of matches last season before being eventually pipped to the title, and what is more, they did it by playing an exciting brand of attacking football that has obviously caught Abramovich's eye.

More importantly, though, Spalletti also masterminded Roma's shock 4-2 aggregate defeat of Real Madrid in the Champions League, with the club winning both legs of their second-round tie in February in what was considered a massive upset, before going on to lose to eventual champions Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

With Abramovich having decided not to pursue chief executive Peter Kenyon's desire of having a British coach in the form of Manchester City-bound Mark Hughes, it seems that only a manager with the experience of coaching in Europe's premier club competition will now suffice, especially after the so-called failure of the Avram Grant experiment last season.

That means that the likes of Croatia's Slaven Bilic, Getafe's Michael Laudrup and Chelsea's former France international Didier Deschamps, all considered to be some of the continent's most sought-after young coaches, are out of the running.

Although Roma, like Milan, would be reluctant to allow a coach they prize so highly to depart, it is thought, however, that unlike their Milanese counterparts, they would be unable to resists Abramovic's financial advances, especially with their parent company, Italpetroli, said to have debts in the region of £300 million.

One potential stumbling block to the Italian's appointment, though, is his lack of English, as it was when Chelsea considered the credentials of Spalletti's more experienced compatriot, Marcelo Lippi.

According to bookmakers, Portugal's Brazilian national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari still remains one of the favourites to succeed Grant at the Bridge next season, especially now that both Russia coach Guus Hiddink and Bayern Munich manager Jurgen Klinsmann have ruled themselves out of the running for the job, and the club themselves have cooled their interest in Frank Rijkaard and Roberto Mancini, one-time coaches of Barcelona and Inter until recently.

Scolari, who is said to be interested in the position, is insistent, as he was when the Football Association approached him prior to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, that he will not disrupt Portugal's Euro 2008 preparations to enter into detailed discussions about taking over at Chelsea and that if the club really want him, then they must wait until the end of his adopted country's interest in the tournament.

That stance, combined with a certain wariness at Stamford Bridge over the Brazilian's volatile temperament, and his massive wage demands that scared off any potential interest from Manchester City, have now combined to elevate Spalletti to the position of favourite and front-runner for the job.

You would not bet on it ...
Luciano Spalletti - 7/2
Luis Felipe Scolari - 7/2
Roberto Mancini - 4/1
Frank Rijkaard - 9/2
Carlo Ancelotti - 5/1
Mark Hughes - 8/1
Guus Hiddink - 16/1
Didier Deschamps - 25/1
Marcelo Lippi - 33/1

The contenders
Mark Hughes (Blackburn manager): A favourite of chief executive Peter Kenyon but the former Chelsea player is on the verge of being appointed at Manchester City.
Lucianio Spalletti (Roma coach): In 2006 he was elected Serie A Coach of the Year. His Roma team were famously thrashed 7-1 by Manchester United in the Champions League.
Roberto Mancini (ex-Inter Milan coach): His agent, Giorgio De Giorgis, said: "Mancini is not a person or a coach who likes to propose himself to a club, he waits for a club to look for him."
Luis Felipe Scolari (Portugal coach): "I haven't made a decision yet. My only decision now is to work until after the European Championship. I haven't been told about contact with Chelsea."
Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan coach): "There has never been any contact or meeting with Chelsea, I am 150 per cent remaining at Milan," said Ancelotti. "I do not need to clarify things."
Sven-Goran Eriksson (former Man City manager): Eriksson was first linked with Chelsea in 2004 and again before his departure from City. Not wanted at Stamford Bridge and now set to don a Mexican sombrero.
Guus Hiddink (Russia coach): "The only contact I have had with Chelsea has been with [Roman] Abramovich about the development of Russian football."
Frank Rijkaard (former Barcelona coach): Cancelled his holiday plans after Chelsea had sacked Avram Grant but Chelsea quickly went cool on the Dutchman.

Whose gonna score goals for them now? :D :D

hahahaha, its too damn funny for me. hahhaha

You wont get 100 million thats my bet ;) If the player wants to go, he wants to go. :D

How long have u been watching football? My guess is Real will offer less, and negotiations will start.

the player may want to go kule but explain to me how madrid make united break a contract

if united wanted, they dont have to sell and he could warn the bench

i dont see how they could get around his contract without some sort of massive transfer fee and united said they wont sell him for less than 70m

100m in the bank, must make the owners very happy :)

not only did they get an 86m pay-off by winning the champs league now they getting 100m for ronaldo hahahaha

sure going to make the books look amazing :)

real where stupid then kule

my logic tells me you dont say you will pay 100m for ronaldo and then expect to get him for less bwhahahahahah

united have heard they will pay 100m and will be expecting 100m or 70m plus a player but they should never have said they will pay 100m

Manchester need Ronaldo more than Real do.Real madrid have strikers and dont need him for goals, Manchester are lost without Ronaldo.Rooney is your best striker and has only scored 12 goals this season.

Kule is correct in saying his going for far less than 100m.Lets see Fergusan field a player that doesnt want to be in his team, he knows it cant happen thats why he was threatening to bench ronaldo.

he never threatened to bench him as far as i know

i said he could just bench him and not sell him if the price is not right

man united know they are sitting on the best player on the planet and believe me they wont sell him cheap

100m or no deal they will say

madrid will say, we said we could afford 100m

united will say ok fine deal is done

Its idle threats, he cant keep millions like that on his bench. He will have to sell as he will need the money for a striker.
