Barry deal back on confirmed by MON himself. Getting a bit stupid now, first it's off because Liverpool missed the deadline by 15 minutes, then it's back on and Liverpool have up till the 31 August to do the deal. Looks like it's a formality that he's coming now unfortunately.

Liverpool have up until end of August to sign midfielder

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has conceded that Gareth Barry could still sign for Liverpool this summer.

Barry, who is reportedly valued by his current club at around £18million, had been expected to remain at Villa Park for the new season after a set deadline for his proposed transfer to Anfield was not met.

However, after holding talks with the England international and his agent, O'Neill has conceded that Liverpool have up until the end of the current transfer window to secure Barry's signature.

He said on the club's official website: "We had a meeting last Monday with Gareth and his agent at which we all agreed we would have a 5pm deadline on Wednesday and if Liverpool had not proved they had the wherewithal to proceed with the transfer deal then we would all leave that aside and go on with it.

"I was hoping that would be the case and this was not a matter of Liverpool missing the deadline by 15 minutes, as seems to have been reported.
Disappointed

"Liverpool first showed their interest in signing Gareth Barry almost four months ago, so this is not a case of missing a deadline by 15 minutes. That's simply not true.

"The following morning we were very upbeat on the strength of what had happened on Wednesday evening. We were very buoyant and optimistic that everything could come back to normal again.

"That wasn't to be though. On Thursday there was a meeting between Gareth's agent, myself and the player. They still felt that even though the deadline had passed they still felt Liverpool were going to come in and do the deal.

"Obviously I was disappointed to hear that. Gareth's head is a bit all over the place at the moment and they asked for some more time.

"So I've listened to what they've said and I'll go with it - reluctantly but I'll go with it. There will be no deadline and Liverpool have all the time in the world now to sign Gareth Barry. They've got up to the normal window, which is the 31st of this month.

"So it's really up to them, Gareth and his agent to sort it out. I've decided this is the only way forward for us really.

"I have a football club to run and I really do want people who want to play for us.

"If Liverpool at the end of it all do not come up with the money, that's no-one else's fault but their own.

"I'd be delighted if that was the case and Gareth stayed. But I would doubt that very much. The ball is very much in their court."

One of the most drawn out transfer saga's of the summer looks to be coming to an end with news breaking that Liverpool and Aston Villa have finally agreed on a fee for England midfielder Gareth Barry.

The club's have been in a bitter war of words over the transfer and despite Villa manager martin O'Neill saying yesterday that he is "absolutely delighted" Barry would be staying at Villa Park and "relieved there is resolution and closure to the transfer saga".

It appears however that the move will be completed within the next couple of days after both BBC and sportsmail have reported that a deal is close to being finalized.



According to sportsmail Villa will receive a £17.5million fee plus right back Steve Finnan in exchange for a midfielder who will fulfill his wish to play in the Champions League this season after all.

To find the money, Liverpool needed to provide the bank with a guarantee that funds to cover the move will be raised during the remainder of the close season.

The transfer has dragged on since May when Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez made it clear that Barry was his top priority.



Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed will have to sell players to fund the Barry transfer and it is believed that right back Steve Finnan will be included in the transfer.Jermaine Pennant, Xabi Alonso and Andriy Voronin are also likely to be sold in the bid to raise funds.

That proves nothing, this was written last thursday yet MON has come out yesterday and said in his interview that it is up to Liverpool now to make the deal happen (hence, come up with the money). Therefore it is not done untill both parties have confirmed that it is done.

Of coarse it's going to be a done deal in the week to come (in my oppinion) but it is not a done deal yet and anything can happen. Don't forget the Gerrard saga 3 years ago.
 
i meant that in a joking way....It's only a done deal when he's standing outside Anfield next to rafa with a scarf in his hand:)

But i think it's done because Finnan was not with the squad yesterday in scotland and he is fit because he played against Villarreal.

Agreed. It's obvious why he wasn't in the squad. I would expect the signing to be confirmed on Monday or Tuesday. And to my surprise, it looks like Alonso will be staying which means that we would have a lot of quality midfielders eyeing spots in the team. The idea of Barry coming in my view was because Alonso was on his way.

Arsène Wenger wants Xabi Alonso to form a Spanish midfield axis with Cesc Fábregas at Arsenal next season, provided Liverpool dramatically lower their £18m price for the marginalised playmaker.

Arsenal have made an initial approach for the 26-year-old Alonso, who has been told he can leave Anfield for the right price. His first-team prospects are threatened by the imminent arrival of Gareth Barry; Liverpool's manager, Rafael Benítez, hopes finally to complete the saga of Barry's £18m transfer from Aston Villa this week, after Martin O'Neill was forced to make a U-turn over his captain's future, and has insisted on a similar fee for Alonso as he attempts to balance the books.

Benítez's price tag, however, has deterred Arsenal from returning with a firm offer for a player they value at closer to the £10.5m Liverpool paid Real Sociedad for him four years ago. The deal will remain only a remote possibility unless Arsenal revise their stance or, despite Benítez's insistence that Alonso and Barry can operate in his already crowded central midfield, the Liverpool manager's need to raise funds forces a compromise.

"I don't think it will be easy [for him to leave]," admitted Benítez in Glasgow on Saturday. "The value of Alonso in the market will be really high. We are really pleased with him and we don't want him to go unless we get a very good price."

Liverpool had intended to sell Alonso to Juventus to finance Barry's transfer but, despite the collapse of that deal and a lack of suitors apart from Arsenal, Benítez will sign Villa's captain provided Liverpool's co-owners underwrite a loan to conclude the £18m deal. Tom Hicks and George Gillett promised the money before Villa's deadline to complete the transfer last week, only for a revised payment structure to cause Liverpool to miss the cut-off point - whereupon Villa issued a statement insisting, farcically, that the deal was off.

Liverpool's willingness to meet Villa's asking price led Barry and his agent, Alex Black, to insist again on the move on Friday morning. O'Neill and Randy Lerner, Villa's owner, then ended their resistance and put the onus back on Liverpool to come up with the package they had promised last week. "I gave it some thought and realised there is little point in pretending," said the Villa manager. "Gareth would want to join Liverpool and therefore there would be no deadline. I have agreed with Gareth now. That's it, no problem: Liverpool have all the time in the world to do it if they want to raise the money."


Rafa is making a big mistake if he decides to sell Alonso to Arsenal, not only are we going to become weaker (Barry no way near the class of Alonso) but it will make Arsenal even stronger.....Fabregas and Alonso in the midfield......mouthwatering. Hope it is just a rumour and there's no truth in this.

IMO Barry is better in the Prem. But Arsenal will play to Alonso's strengths unlike Liverpool away from home. It seems Rafa is intent on getting another CM. He seems obsessed with them :o
 
To be honest, I haven't seen Barry play enough, but from what I have seen I really don't understand why Rafa is so determined to get him.

At first I thought it was the possibility of the proposed law changes regarding how many English payers you must have in a team, but the rest of his purchases don't support this.

I think the price is too high (both in terms of cash, and the players that will have to leave). And to sell to one of your major rivals :confused::confused:.
 
My main problem is the money would be better spent elsewhere. Our midfield CM is probably our strongest area. Even Plesies(SP) as our 5th choice is good enough. We need wingers. We have no real qualty there FFS. None, nothing, zero, zilch :mad:

Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart from German club Hamburg SV.

The Spanish Giants announced the news today that Hamburg captain van der Vaart has signed a 5 year deal at the Bernabaeu.

Real released this statement on their club website:

"Real Madrid C.F. and Hamburg SV have reached an agreement for the 5-season transfer of Dutch player Rafael Ferdinand van der Vaart to the former club. The agreement is subject to the player's medical examination and his signing of a federation contract.


Van der Vaart will be officially presented on Tuesday 5 August at 13:00 CET in the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium."



Van der Vaart moved to Bundesliga club Hamburg SV on July 1, 2005, where he was positioned as playmaker. In his first season in Germany, Van der Vaart began developing the form he used to herald in Ajax. He finished the season as Hamburg's top scorer, including a string long range efforts, and earned positive reviews for his performances both within Germany, and abroad.

The deal will cost Real a reported fee of 9 million Euros and will strengthen an already star studed line up at the Bernabaeu.
