Lots of Stormers bringing up the knees lately, obviously a tactic
massive cash windfall of about R22-million will flow into the coffers of the Southern Kings if they are booted out of Super Rugby and play in an enlarged European Pro12 tournament.
Insiders say the Eastern Cape franchise can expect the cash bonanza from TV rights for the tournament, which includes teams like Munster, Scarlets, Ospreys, Cardiff Blues and Edinburgh.
Though a formal decision has yet to be made, the exit of the Kings and the Cheetahs appears to be a formality and will be made official on July 7 at a special general meeting of SA Rugby bosses.
Apart from SA representation in the Pro12, there is now talk that the Pumas and Griquas could be playing in the Anglo-Welsh Cup next season. The future of the four teams was apparently discussed at meetings held last week.
Janse van Rensburg passes comeback test
The Golden Lions’ defeat to Griquas in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge semifinals may have been a disappointing end to a potent campaign, but there was one positive to come from it – Super Rugby and Springbok centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg came through the game unscathed.
Janse van Rensburg made his comeback from a 12-week layoff due to a knee injury sustained in the Lions’ Super Rugby win against the Stormers, making an impact off the bench in the last 20 to 30 minutes in one of those too little, too late efforts.
But the main thing was that he came through it with no lingering pain from the original injury, even though he did suffer a mild concussion from a clash of heads: “The body feels good, I’ve got a bit of a concussion but it’s nothing major, it was just a bit of a head on head situation but it’s not as bad as I thought it might be.
“To be honest I stressed a bit before the game, it’s always difficult to come back from a knee injury because you never know how strong it is. But it was good being back on the field and taking that first carry. I’m still a bit rusty and I see a lot of room for improvement going forward.”
Lions coach Bafana Nhleko gave the impression that having been allowed to play Janse van Rensburg for 20 to 30 minutes by the medical staff, he and his coaching staff had to deliberate whether those minutes would be spent starting or coming off the bench.
“The thing is in a centre combination you build relationships, you build partnerships,” he explained the call they went with. “We felt the two youngsters had done enough and to bring in a guy to come in for just one week you’ve almost disrupted that relationship. It was important for us to back the youngsters and to show them that we reward form.
“The second part of it was that in the last 20/30 minutes, as Rohan was only allowed to play, we felt maybe the Griquas would fall slightly off and he’d come and have that impact that we needed. It was a tactic that had the desired effect but the difficulty was that we were already chasing the game by then. Had we been in a different position it might have been a stroke of genius.”
Looking ahead, Janse van Rensburg said his lot was to work on getting stronger, while where and when he played was in the hands of the coaches: “Obviously it’s back to Super Rugby now, I think we’ll fall into that squad now so I just have to work hard to make my knee even stronger, and hopefully get some game time against the Sharks or whenever it comes.
“But it was nice to be back, it’s always humbling to play with these players, it’s always nice to see how they serve each other and how they play together. I felt really good in the game today, I just need to get back into it and feel confident in my knee again.”

You want to drop Jan to the bench?.... yeh, that's not gonna happen.

Cape Town - The Cheetahs and Southern Kings’ participation in Europe’s Pro12 competition is expected to be made official within the next few days.
SA Rugby confirmed last week that the Cheetahs and Kings will not play Super Rugby in 2018, with both franchises agreeing that they would be seeking other international opportunities.
The Pro12 - a competition featuring teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy - is believed to be the most viable option, with several reports indicating that the tournament will be rebranded to Pro14.
According to Bloemfontein-based radio station, OFM, an official announcement could be made as soon as Saturday (July 15).
A report on the radio station’s website indicates that the Pro12 organisers would make the announcement themselves, with Cheetahs CEO Harold Verster commenting on the matter: “We have negotiated an amicable solution and there is a wonderful opportunity for us up north, for the Cheetahs and Kings. Unfortunately they have opted to make the release themselves once everything is in place. That will be around about the 15th of July, once their board is in place.”
The Kings and Cheetahs play their final Super Rugby match on Friday night when they square off in Port Elizabeth (19:00)

Hell Yeah!
I really hope either team (Cheetahs, SK) go in with a bang, clean house and win the competition! I also hope their players make bucket loads of money.
That would be so awesome!
