Michael Leitch wants to stick with the Chiefs ahead of 2019 World Cup in Japan

Michael Leitch sees his future with the Chiefs with the World Cup in Japan on the horizon.

The Japanese captain will start his third game of the season at No 8 against the Bulls in Hamilton on Saturday night, as the Chiefs bid to go five from five.

Super Rugby got the best out of Leitch ahead of the 2015 World Cup in England, where Japan shocked everyone - including themselves - to beat South Africa and win three of their four pool games.

"Hopefully I can stay for another couple of years with the [2019] World Cup coming up soon," the 28-year-old said.

Good, the Cherry Blossoms needs this experience, the same opinion that I have with Amanaki. Amanaki however needs to play in a better team, a better managed team. I would like to see Leitch play with the Cherry Blossoms this year, he and Hendrik Tui has made several excuses since the Rugby World Cup…

Player may strike should Australia lose Super Rugby franchise

Australia’s Rugby Union Players’ Association (RUPA) is considering strike action by its players, should the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) endorse changes to the Super Rugby composition of teams for 2018, which will involve dropping one Australian franchise and two SA ones.

SANZAAR (South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina Rugby) met earlier in March about proposals for a reduced Super Rugby format, involving 15 teams, down from the current 18.

RUPA is looking at protest action, after speculation that either the Western Force, the Melbourne Rebels – or even the ACT Brumbies – could be dropped in the changes.

It is concerned that not only the top teams among the Super Rugby franchises will be affected, but that it will have a significantly negative effect on associated lower levels of Australian domestic rugby, such as the third-tier National Rugby Championship (NRU).

If for example, the Melbourne Rebels were axed, it would affect the player-base for the Melbourne Rising team in the NRU.

The RUPA cannot take strike action until January 1, in terms of its current collective bargaining agreement with the ARU, but could enact its plan in the pre-season of the Super Rugby competition in 2018.

Former chief executive of RUPA, Greg Harris, said: “The professional game evolved out of player militancy.

“It might well be that player militancy again is the only action which looks after the best interests of the game in Australia, because there are no indications that the ARU are performing this task at present.”

Previously, as head of RUPA, Harris had expressed his disapproval of the 18-team format and commissioned a report which suggested that the ARU should instead seek a trans-Tasman competition with New Zealand, cutting out the involvement of SA, Argentina and Japan.

Let them strike. They're probably I not contributing equitably in monetary terms, so why should they get inequitable preference.

As a loyal Cheetah supporter for the last 27 years, I wonder if we really should still be playing in the Super Series..... South Africa in all honesty can only host three teams in the comp..... the rest should wake up and smell the coffee....

Stormers looking good in this game, thought the Cheetahs would put in a better performance.

After today I can understand why they want to drop the Cheetahs from Super rugby. Stormers are playing a great game.

I must add that Cheetahs are my second team

Stormers walked through this match. Poor game by the Cheetahs. At least these teams scored tries, unlike the Bulls...

Who's the Bulls ? Are they playing rugby ? ;)

I will say this much. The Sharks started asking questions about Gary Gold’s ongoing potential as coach, he quitted. Nollis Marais, he is in a similar position hanging by a thread. I didn’t get to watch the game, but I have seen some calling on Ulengo’s and Gelant’s head. Next week the Bulls are playing the Sunwolves in Tokyo, and I have already seen the Sunwolves training squad noting some returning depth to bulk their continuity. Lose that game, and the Bulls are in big trouble.

Stormers passing and flicks looking like a NZ team today :wtf:

Definitely the influence of their NZ attacking coach (Paul someoneorother). The offload count must have been through the roof. Was great to see. Going to make next week's pick between the stormers and the Chiefs a toughy...
