Just caught the highlights of the NZ derby this morning. The skills on display were just unreal. The best part though was Tony Johnson, the commentator. Sounded like he was already losing his voice

Dangerous tackle, the Reds #5 lifted Genia horizontally and dropped him on his head. Yellow only, the man is now back on.

The Reds feeling the pressure just before half-time. No captain, only 14 men, another 40 minutes are going to be tough.

That explains the score difference. I was following this one on the SuperBru score updates (not ideal, but it is what it is during office hours) and just couldn't imagine how crappy the Reds had to be playing to make the Rebels look that good.

In the Rebels defence, the more the game went on the more they came together. Towards the end, they tried a lot of new stuff which looks way out of the game plan, but that is to be expected with the huge leading margin on the scoreboard. The Reds demise today, may have been the push the Rebels needed to form confidence in unity. Early on the Rebels looked like a bunch of strangers together.

I don't think that they are quite on the same level as the Brumbies and Waratahs, formation-wise, but 3rd best in their conference they may very well be. A-hem will have to see how the Sunwolves fare.

Higginbotham said it was an everyday tackle, although the burly No.8 didn't attempt to use his arms and there was heavy contact to the head.

I was just going in for a tackle," Higginbotham said post-match at AAMI Park.

"A two-man tackle, one bloke goes low, one goes high.

"We practise that in pre-season and I've been doing it for 12 years.

"There's not a lot of things harder than sitting there for 70 minutes."

Coach Brad Thorn said he believed the referee Brendon Pickerill was trying his best, but felt it was a "big call" with 70 minutes to play.
