Metro police are investigating allegations that two supercars dicing in Sandton led to a horrific accident in which a Dainfern resident died on Sunday.

Jan Embro (53), the Swedish born head of marketing for Ericcson locally, burnt to death in his Ultima GRT after it left the road whilst allegedly jockeying for position with a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 roadster.

Road racing allegations

Embro and Darryl Leigh, a retired Johannesburg attorney who was driving the Lamborghini L640, were apparently driving in William Nicol Drive near the crossing of Republic Road in Sandton.

A metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, said they were investigating claims by witnesses that the two men had been dicing when the accident happened.

Mamonyane said: "Embro apparently lost control of his vehicle when he couldn't get past the Lamborghini.

"It burst through a fence, rolled, came to a standstill in the veld and burst into flames."

Lambo driver uninjured

A woman and her three-year-old daughter saw the accident happen. She tried in vain to extinguish the flames.
A Netcare 911 spokesperson, Nick Dollman, said they were called out at about 16:45.

Dollman said Embro died in his car. Netcare 911 counsellor had been on hand to assist the woman and her daughter.
"Leigh wasn't injured and declined medical attention," Dollman added.

Mamonyane said it wasn't yet known if any one else had been in the car with Leigh. A case of culpable homicide was also being investigated, she said.

The Ultima GTR is a low-volume supercar of British origin, designed by famed performance car engineer Lee Noble.

Featuring a space-frame chassis and plastic bodywork, it’s powered by a range of Chevrolet sourced V8 engines and devoid of most modern safety features such as ABS modulated brakes, traction or stability control. It currently holds the world acceleration and deceleration sprint record from 0-160km/h and back to standstill.

Lamborghini’s Mucielago LP640 roadster is one of the world’s fastest open topped cars, powered by a mid-mounted 6.2l V12 producing 426kW. It features a host of contemporary safety features including ABS brakes and traction control, with driver and passenger front airbags onboard too.

Luckily no one innocent was killed or I'd have to give a damn (well, the woman and her daughter suffered trauma they didn't need which is bad :()...

Funny thing - in the December holidays, I was stopped at at traffic light next to, who must have been, Jan Embro in his Orange Ultima. I actually wound down my window and was chatting to him about his car - asked him what it was, what its 0-100km/h time was etc. Seemed like a friendly guy.

Pity he was being a twat on public roads. These ass clowns in their fast cars need to realise that if they want to go fast, visit a track day. Otherwise, stick to the ****ing speed limit.

I'm not saying what they did is right, but this exact same thing could have happened at a track day - it has nothing to do with road vs. track.

On public roads you're more likely to end up hurting an innocent bystander or law abiding road user.

This didn't happen here (thankfully), although the article didn't make the details of the accident clear. For all we know, the Ultima had to swerve to avoid a slower car or an obstruction in the road or something.

I was thinking about it this weekend - I think advanced driving courses should be compulsory, people on our roads just don't know how to drive. I think I saw what could have been about six serious accidents this weekend in Cape Town. e.g. people half way up an offramp decide they actually didn't want to take it, and swerve back onto the highway, without looking for cars coming at 120km/h on the highway - saw a bakkie do a few 360's trying to avoid one of these on Saturday.

This was an Ultima GTR, not a normal Noble. Maybe it wasn't him, but I don't think there's many Ultima GTRs driving around in that particular area of JHB.

Well, you're a twat too then.

He made his bed, now he can sleep in it... forever.

so the lambo is faster ? :)

well.. ya.. i think in 6th gear at 60km/h, a lambo will nearly be stalling :) and still doing 20l/100km...

i wouldn't be able to drive a lambo slow.. and the fact that it could probably brake from 160 to 0 faster than the average car on our roads can from 60-0 helps...

Ah, so that time you maybe diced when you were 21 you should of burned to death and it would serve you right ??

If everybody got burned to death in their life for making a mistake we would all be bursting into flames on a daily bases.

it's easy to stand above everyone else and point fingers really....untill it happens to you, so yes, poor guy. he got burned alive for God's sake, give him some pitty atleast.

If I had died at 21 because I was being a stupid cünt, then I'd have deserved what I got. This guy (and the prick in the lambo) were endangering the lives of regular road users, pedestrians and bystanders. Reckless behaviour like this is not deserving of an "ag shame".

Yes, it is easy to stand and point fingers, because I drive at, or below, the speed limit at all times.
