Surprising FNB web browser notice

Oopsie.

If you push the envelope, mixups like this is bound to happen.

However, a FNB spokesperson has explained that the bank is only stopping support for Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and it is reworking the information to clearly indicate that only access via IE7 is being closed in June.

Only IE7 is affected. Headline is misleading IMHO

Ummm... don't they have a Q&A process before code is pushed to the production servers?

Makes me wonder how well their internet banking code/gui is tested!

their website is more misleading.

1) Read the message before logging in.
2) Found the internet explorer download page amusing on my MacBook.
3) Noticed that my FNB home page was FUBAR.
4) Went to Absa's website to sign up as a new client.

I wonder how many other people don't know this is only a fail?

This article does an extremely poor job of explaining that the message should never have been shown to anyone using a broweser other than IE 7, and that in future Chrome and FireFox will continue to be supported. Poor job from both the journalist and the FNB spokesperson.

Indeed, and if you are using IE7 then you really need to update your browser, really.

FNB technical fail (for showing the message incorrectly to non-IE7 users)
FNB public relations fail for not clearly explaining the message was shown in error to non-IE7 users.
Journalism fail for not explaining clearly that the message was shown in error to non-IE7 users.

The FAIL is strong in these parts.

Don't forget Ipwn 4 signing up with ABSA... :D

How do you support the claim that it should not have been shown to Firefox or Chrome?

As was yesterdays FNB pop-up, checkout the thread Quinton refers to :D

^ This. It was kind-of a play on the whole situation. Outrage mixed with relief and/or irritation at the initial information being misleading.

Also it's amusing to poke fun at our religious beliefs (that is, Firefox vs Chrome vs IE vs Opera vs Safari).

That was really the spokesperson's job. This is not a web developer blog, so I don't think it's necessary that we explain how an <!--IF lte ie 7> tag works, and we can't put words in their mouth or make assumptions about what happened without justification for why we make those assumptions.
