I might have to get myself an SUV at some stage and I have quite a few options. New or used.
I travel to Limpopo with wife and kid once or twice a month and a few kilometers of gravel road.

Mitsubishi Outlander
Subaru Forester
Nissan Xtrail
Honda CRV

Safety and comfort are my major priorities. It should also be reliable, spacious and not too costly to maintain.
At the moment the Outlander is my favorite. Any other option I should look at?

I'm not interested in Nissan Qashqai, KIA Sportage, Hyndai ix35.

I'm not a huge fan of the Outlander personally, largely because of its motor - there are better, more advanced ways of powering a mid-size car than a 2.4l naturally aspirated petrol. I suspect it'll be rather wheezy and thirsty up here on the reef.

If I were in the market for something similar it'd be a toss-up between a Forester and a Tiguan. Not new though; let someone else take the initial depreciation hit.

I heard it's 14l/100KM

Chev Captiva?
Nah. My sister has it and I'm not in favor of it.

Outlanders (n/a) are as heavy on gas as a turbo Forester, so be warned.

I have just sold our demo Forester X with 15000 km on the clock for R280 000 - so yes, it is easy to get a decent SUV for under 300k. ;)

Used Honda CR-V for the application. Check out Midrand; they seem to have good stock

Any used 2005-2007 STIs with low mileage?

Outlander - people I know who own them all complain that they use a lot of fuel

Captiva - sold mine because it was too heavy on juice as well (and crap service from Reeds)

Criteria based on anything or purely brand bias?

Sorry, thats what happens when you skimread. :p
Was also looking for something and they are my 3 choices. :D

The Outlander felt big enough for me when I was in one, never test drove it though. Could fold the rear seat to make more room.
The Subaru performs better than all of them. It is reliable and safe. Not sure if it is comfortable though.
The CR-V is a Honda. Don't know much about the car.
The new Xtrail looks big enough though. I didn't like the previous model.

As for the ones I don't like, I just don't feel they offer the SUV feel I want.

Try a used Ford Kuga - it uses a detuned Ford ST engine.
