lol ... OP said 300K max! Kuga is lovely but still very new, you wont get one under 350K imo.

Jeep Patriot? Boxy styling yes, but very comfy, good on juice, and can do some 4X4. I picked up a 2010 model with 50 000km for just under 200K. I have the 2.0l Kia Sportage (not 4X4) and its nice, but not as nice as the wifees jeep :(. Also does not do anything under 11.5l/100km in town. Usually I average about 12.

The Kuga is actually very old - just new to South Africa - and uses the POS outgoing 2.5 5 cylinder turbo charged piece of crap engine. Wouldn't touch it.

I think the Patriot is also good. I confuse it with the Compass.

@Fuma.... Compass is pretty, like a mini Grand Cherokee.... but its just a dressed up station wagon, no 4X4 at all..... Patriot is at least slightly trail rated.

@Creeper : iX35 = Girly Styling, Sportage = Manly Styling! but the same car in every way except shell and little interior differences.

It's a crap engine. Compare the power output of the 2.0L 4 cylinder petrol engine that replaces it in the ST.

166kw/320nm on a two-point-five 5cl TURBO?! Alfa Romeo produce similar power with an 1.75l engine.

That's what's wrong with the engine.
 
I can actually give you some advice as I drove most of these SUV's recently. If you are looking for lots of off-road capability go with the forester. However, it's not a luxury SUV. Inside it's very basic and the ride quality is OK, but damn the car handles extremely well.

If you want THE BEST ride quality go with the Tiguan. I cannot tell you how comfortable this car is. However, off road it's limited if you don't go for the 4x4. The 2x4 you can get for quite a bit under 300K - still a very good car.

IX35, Sportage are just stupid. Too low to go off-road, you might as well get a sedan. Nissan X-trail is so ugly I couldn't look at it twice and the Qashqai was so small inside my elbow hit my dad on the passenger side :O

Honda CRV is a good all rounder, however won't set you on fire. Not as good off road as the forester and not as comfortable as the Tiguan. It's very reliable though. It's the Corolla of SUV's :D

Not sure if I'll consider the Outlander - apparently a lot of it's tech comes from Peugeot. I've also heard they have lots of road noise.
