I'm loving all the information so far. And thanks Ivan for the tip.

By the way what is this emissions tax thing? I thought the newer cars have low-emissions already? And is Turbo what I think it is? Used to play Need for Speed and think NoS when I hear turbo.

Just use waze on your cellphone ffs.

I use google maps on my tablet at the moment and it's a constant race to get to familiar roads before my battery dies. I'm new to Cape Town and get lost very often so I need it. And I think back to when I nearly got arrested in the UK for using my cell as a navigation tool. I'd rather just invest and not worry about battery and accidents.

Do you need to go offroad? If so do you need a transfer case (low range)?
How much packing space is important?
Is road driving comfort more important than load space?

From those we can narrow it down.

Not really no. The most offroad I'd be doing would be the potholes in the Eastern Cape. As long as I can fit two medium sized suitcases into the boot I'm happy and I need comfort more than load space.

What is transfer case?

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

In all serious pretty much all new cars have turbos these days. It basically makes an engine more powerful so they reduce the size of the engines to decrease consumption etc then add a turbo. Basically it's one more part that can break and can cause people to have hissy fits. In reality, worst case scenario would cost you around 20k and that's after the car goes out of motorplan/warranty/etc.

Emissions tax just gets added onto the cost of the car when you buy it. Doesn't really factor into the decision making process.

With regards to the gps get a car charger and something like the Kenu Airframe and then use Waze. It's basically better than any car gps and the charger and airframe shouldn't cost more than R800 or so.

Emissions tax is based on fuel consumption, so indirectly it is part of the decision making process.

With the above in mind, make sure you go for a 4x2. The 4WD will be more expensive and have a higher fuel consumption...

Check out the Jeep Renegade - beautiful but overpriced IMO.
Honda CRV is nice
Wait for the Tucson
BMW X1
Audi Q3
Merc GLA is really nice too
Ford EcoSport
Nissan Juke if you like the looks...

There are many in the market... It sounds like you don't need such a big SUV as well :). For your needs and if it were my cash, I'd check out the GLA quite seriously - the one I drove over a few days was great :)

I would definitely shortlist a Ford Ecosport - you'll get into a top spec Titanium for well under R300k... (I own one for the wife)

Also worth a test drive is the new Captur from Renault, if you are not afraid of French cars.

Avoid: Opel Mokka as it s overpriced and the boot is tiny.

Yes, the GLA is very nice too.

I'm personally going to have to disagree here as the German-Made Mokka does cost more yes; but I feel it's a better built car than the other said cheaper options.

The engine is stronger as well. If your budget can extend to it I would not rule it out.

cigarette lighter charger and dashboard mount for phone

Have seen a few GLA's driving around, looks amazing, but comes at a very hefty price tag.

Out of everything mentioned I'd go with the GLA if money wasn't an issue.

I saw 1 yesterday; a silvr full house GLA 220 CDI 4Matic

Number plate was <GLA 220-WP>; not able grab a pic.

List price on this model; before options; is R538k! Eina...

Sweet looking car though

So I have a lot of thinking to do. I'm busy compiling a spreadsheet will your recommendations with pictures. I'll work my way to a shortlist and let you know. Thanks for all the help :)
