Powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine with 86 kW and 151 Nm of torque, the Vitara automatic offers good refinement with an indestructible demeanor. It’s also light on fuel and Suzuki claims a combined cycle consumption figure of 6.0 L/100 km and we’ve found the Vitara’s engine to be consistently frugal. We are quite confident, therefore, that owners should get close to 800 km from a single 47 L tank.
2. Practical design
The Vitara’s boxy design benefits interior space hugely. The well-shaped boot is rated at 375 L, but by folding the 60:40 split rear seats more than 1 200 L of space is on offer. Most impressively, this good luggage capacity doesn’t come at the cost of rear passenger space. Even comparatively tall adults will find the rear bench comfortable, with good levels of leg- and headroom. The ground clearance of 185 mm, generously plump tyres and good refinement also makes the Vitara one of the few modern-day crossovers that truly feels comfortable on rougher gravel surfaces.

Facelifted Suzuki Vitara gets 1.0 and 1.4 petrol engines
Previous 1.6 petrol unit is gone, replaced by engines shared with the rest of Suzuki's range
Suzuki has ditched the 1.6-litre petrol engine from its Vitara small SUV, replacing it with 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre engines from the brand’s other models.
Borrowed from the new Swift, the 1.0 is new to the Vitara and provides 109bhp and 125lb ft of torque. The 1.4, shared with the S-Cross, gets 138bhp and 162lb ft. The smaller engine is available on entry-level SZ4 and mid-range SZ-T models, while top-spec SZ5 cars get the 1.4.
The emissions of both engines are lower than those of the 1.6 and were tested on the new WLTP cycle, although Suzuki will not release the figures until closer to the car’s on-sale date in early 2019.
In addition to the revised engine line-up, the Vitara gets a subtle refresh in exterior styling in its facelift, with revised light clusters, grille and bumper at the front, as well as more intricate tail-lights at the rear.
Inside, higher-quality materials have been used on the dashboard, while a colour screen is now fitted to the instrument cluster, which has also been redesigned.
Safety equipment has been given a boost; top-spec SZ5 trim now gets standard automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and assistance, traffic sign recognition, blindspot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.
The Vitara is currently Suzuki’s best-selling model in the UK after being introduced, in its third generation, in 2015. Suzuki shifts about 1000 per month. The current best-seller is the two-wheel drive 1.6-litre SZ-T, and the 1.0-litre SZ-T with two-wheel drive will take over as the range best-seller after the tweaks take effect. The 1.0-litre engine is expected to outsell the larger 1.4 overall.
Prices won't be revealed until closer to the car’s launch date, but a small increase is expected from the current range’s starting price of £16,000. First deliveries start in September.

2019 Suzuki Vitara incorporates numerous visual, technical and specification upgrades. Vitara has enjoyed strong UK sales success since launch in 2015 and it is currently the most popular model in the Suzuki range.
Firstly, Suzuki Vitara will be available with both 1.0-litre and 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo charged petrol engines as introduced in the S-Cross model range late last year and these will replace the 1.6-litre petrol engine. Suzuki’s popular compact crossover, the Vitara, has been granted a UK-market update for 2019. These changes include both visual and technical upgrades, as well as a revised engine line-up.
In international markets the Vitara will source power from either the brand’s new 1,0-litre three-cylinder or 1,4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged BoosterJet engine. The 103 kW/220 N.m 1,4-litre replacing the previous naturally aspirated 1,6-litre option in the lineup.
Visually the updated Vitara gains a new grille, including fog lamp and scuff plate execution. New LED head- and taillamps are also included. Of the interior changes, a new soft touch material for the upper facia and a new instrument cluster with an LCD information display stand out.
The 2019 model also gets an array of new safety features including as dual sensor brake support, lane departure warning and intervention, traffic sign recognition, blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert.
Suzuki SA has told us that the updated model is expected reach our roads by the first quarter of next year.

The facelifted Suzuki Vitara has officially arrived in South Africa, with the make-up of the local range unchanged at launch. That said, the Japanese firm has confirmed the so-called “Boosterjet” turbocharged 1,4-litre petrol engine will join the line-up later in 2019.
So, what’s new? Well, the updated Vitara gains a fresh frontal design, new alloy wheel options, revised rear styling and extra standard equipment. Refreshingly, though, pricing has not increased (see full pricing at the bottom of the story).
Up front, new headlamp clusters (flagship GLX models boast full-LED items) flank a redesigned grille with bold vertical bars and a large “S” logo. Round back, new LED taillamps have been added, while optional silver scuff plates and side mouldings are still offered.
While Suzuki says it added various “new creature comforts” inside, it claims to have spent the “most time and attention on the fit and feel of the interior”. For instance, the upper instrument panel is now finished in a soft-touch material, while GLX models feature a new seat trim combining suede and faux-leather. Mid-tier GL+ models, meanwhile, now feature contrasting white stitching on the pews.
GL+ and GLX models furthermore gain a new 4,2-inch full colour information display (with the entry-level GL model featuring a 3,5-inch monochrome LCD). These two trim levels also score the brand’s “Smart Linkage Display Audio system”, a touchscreen-based arrangement complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality and a reversing camera. The base GL derivative, meanwhile, retains the old system.
The GL+ and GLX spec levels now feature climate control and cruise control, with the GLX boasting model-specific instrument panel trim, keyless access (with push-button start) and a panoramic sunroof flanked by chromed roof rails. The key change for this 2019 Suzuki Vitara will be the introduction of the 103 kW turbocharged 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine, which will arrive later in 2019.
Other changes range from a new face, new alloy wheels and new LED lights at the rear. Inside, there are upgrades ranging from new premium materials used in the upper instrument panel, new upholstery to a new 4.2-inch full-colour LCD information display. The top-spec model gains the Smart Linkage Display Audio system which features smartphone integration, built-in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity. In terms of features, the Vitara has always been decently equipped. These include electric windows (front only on the GL model), central locking, air conditioner with pollen filter, power steering and foldable rear seats. For the GL+ and GLX spec levels, Suzuki added climate control, cruise control, a multifunction steering, all-round electric windows and chrome detailing. And on the GLX model, designers have distinguished this top spec model with a unique instrument panel trim, keyless access with push-button Start/Stop and an electric tilt and sliding panoramic sunroof flanked by chromed roof rails. There is also a full-size spare wheel. When it comes to safety, the Suzuki Vitara is fair. There are 7 airbags, electronic stability control (ESP) and ABS brakes with emergency brake assistance. With this safety specifications, the Vitara received a full five-star rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).

The refreshed Vitara will be sold with Suzuki’s promotional 200 000 km / 5-year vehicle warranty. It also has a 4-year / 60 000 km service plan and roadside assistance for the duration of the vehicle warranty. Suzuki has not increased the prices, despite the new look and additional features.
