Hi,

Running Win XP SP 2. Picked up a virus on my system. I ran a couple of antivirus, malware removal tools etc. It seems to be clean now.

However as soon as I've been working for a couple of min the following error message appears.

svchost.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0128f496" referenced memory at "0x0128f496". The memory could not be "written".

Click on Ok to terminate the program
click on CANCEL to debug the program

As soon as I click on either option my PC stalls. PC works fine if I just ignore the message and give no response. Tried to google but there does not seem to be alot on the net about it.

Anyone seen this before?

Please be more specific when you say a couple of anti-virus / malware removal tools. I'd suggest running the following: Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and destroy and a decent updated anti-virus program. According to recent reviews Id suggest the Microsoft Security Essentials. Remember to update all these before running the scans.

Probably a fake svchost.exe most likely located in a hidden folder in the root of your hard drive(s).
Try using Malwarebytes Anti Malware to fix it and Avast! antivirus should also pick it up.

Thanks for the replies.

Ran malwarebytes and then Avast which removed the virus. The error message did persist.

This I fixed by running the following XP updates

WindowsXP-KB958644-x86-ENU.exe
WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU.exe
WindowsXP-KB921883-x86-ENU.exe
win32 patch.exe

Thanks
