Morning I recently moved in and i want resurface the pool, however the fiberglass coating is peeling off in patches, any opinions on what to do before painting, something economical;one pool guy suggested fiberglass patching and paint but I,m skeptical of the end result in a long run

So had a granite pool, did the acid wash a few times, got the pool white'ish, but also made the surface extremely rough!

Was very skeptical of the fiberglass option until a friend did and went to check it out.

Did it 9 years ago and I haven't looked back one day!

The benefits I've personally found:
- fill the pool less (think of it like putting water of bricks vs in a bath - the water doesn't get absorbed into the walls at all
- no more algae problem, it used to get ingrained in the granite, now just easily sweeps off and forms much much less
- we went with the slight blue tinge colour, pool is definitely a little warmer than before (unless that's just global warming
- pool has been much easier to maintain, before with the granite, struggled with pool going green often!

That's my two cents work

Yeah I would also tend towards stripping that pool back and then redoing the fibreglass properly... not just patching it.

I tiled mine almost 2 years ago. Old marblite was coming off in patches. This was not a cheap job, but the result is fantastic.

If your pool has a concrete shell, your options, in order of initial price are:
1. Paint
2. Fibreglass
3. Marblite
4. Tile

In my opinion, that is also the order of longevity ie, paint lasts shortest and tiles have the longest lifespan. Whatever option you choose, make sure that the materials and workmanship are good quality. Poor quality will result in rework required and unnecessary additional costs for the rework.

My marbalite/gunnite pool is 42 years old and had become very tough and discolored.

I sanded the pool and grinded some areas down with an angle grinder and decided to go for the epoxy option as it was considerably cheaper than fibreglass.

There is a base coat and 3 top layers, all of which are painted on with rollers.

The whole process was a lot more labour intensive than what I anticipated but the end result is brilliant - had the kids + family + friends in the pool the entire holliday.

Additionally the pool is a lot easier to clean , uses less chemicals and looks great :-)

I also thinking towards that but the problem is the quotations, none is less than R20k

I love this option, the challenge is to get someone who will know what he's doing

I did it myself . Took about 6 weeks, but there were some off days due to storms (in May in Gauteng!!! ) that dumped thousands of litres of water onto the pool, that I had to pump out, then leave a few days for the cement to dry out again.

I did the same but with another product which you apply like normal paint, 2 layers and it looks 1000 times better than before.

My pool is marbelite has some hairline cracks and 1 slightly larger crack.

Pool has been emptied, hairline cracks seem fine but other one is concerning.

Water is seeping through it seems that the old owner covered with a sort of glue to seal the crack. My thoughts are this

1) grind around the crack to remove old glue
2) use water resistant epoxy glue to seal the crack.
3) refill and test.

If the pool still fails and loses water, then will have to drain and either redo marbelite (expensive) or fibreglass (expensive) or epoxy coating (cheapest)

Any of you have any feedback with regards your relining/painting?

i am considering expoxy vs fibreglass currently, price difference is quite large.

Fibreglass 40k marbelite 16k.....

i am getting very similar estimates for fibreglass vs marbelite, and obviously epoxy is generally much cheaper.

from what i can tell fibreglass is better than marbelite unless you have water penetrating the "shell"

Anybody have any recomendations for repainting a fibreglass pool? I've been battling to find someone to do it in CT.

on the subject, how long have you had the fibreglass pool?

other than a new top coat you still happy with the lining?

i feel like his marbelite price is the epoxy price.

16k for marbelite. Using a recommendation from someone. Not a company but an individual.

Would like to go fibreglass butprice is insane .

We only moved in about 4 years ago, but it was rust stained when we moved in. It's a fibreglass pool.
