Switch 2 thread

Remember, Nintendo no longer has the luxury of their portable gaming division that used to carry the company during the N64, GC and WiiU years. They only have 1 software pipeline. One gaming division. They have it all to lose with the Switch 2. Hopefully they won't (takes some puffs from the hopium-pipe)

Switch is their portable gaming division. I'm not sure what you're on about tbh. Every company could lose it all every generation lol. As long as they stick to the hybrid model and don't completely f it up, I think it's pretty safe that they'll be successful. More than successful even.

I think what they're saying is the Switch is their everything now whereas previously they had Gameboy and DS which probably used to be majority of their revenues?

Yea I get that but like... they still do have a portable console. They're in a much stronger position now that they don't have to spread their resources between two devices.

There have been a lot of rumours over the past month but I'm not paying attention to most of them. A lot of people trying to generate clicks and not much evidence or even sense behind a lot of them.

The latest podcast by Nate the Hate debunks a lot of the rumours just on a purely logical basis. However it does add one "confirmation" (take it with a grain of salt of course) - that the SOC will feature DLSS 3.5 ray reconstruction:

That's a pretty freaking huge deal. PS5/XSX ray tracing is based on AMD's implementation which is quite behind the curve compared to Nvidia's. The idea that they would believe it could be feasible to add a full stack RT feature set to the device means that they have confidence that it can pull it off credibly without straining the performance so hard that it's just not worthwhile.

Worst of both worlds

Nintendo. The King of handhelds. Who can argue with over 100million in Gameboy sales? When Sony gave us a hand held with home console titles, Ninty gave us handhelds with handheld titles.Yet, when we could have had a 4ds with rumble, instead we have the toilet paper against the wall and toothpaste tube squeezed in the middle that is the Switch.

One of the strengths of Ninty's handheld line may have been that software could be purchased and just 'work'. Now we get download codes in the boxes, while others that don't even get a physical release(even as a bundle). Makes me wonder if that Nintendo seal of quality is also purchasable on the eShop. Then there's the aspect ratio. At 16:9, this makes the switch Ninty's widest handheld yet,(the 3DS is 15:9). So great for Gradius then. Yet 16:9 is a movie aspect ratio. Surely it wouldn't be used by a handheld just because it can be plugged into a TV?

But hey it's HD, even for those titles where it may not be required. Wave goodbye to handheld titles that were previously a 3rd cheaper compared to their home based counterparts and worse battery life to boot. Which all adds up to an overall more expensive handheld. So a win all round. And that's without even mentioning joy-con drift.

Now Ninty could just be holding back on missing home console features like analogue triggers for the Switch's successor. Yet it wouldn't change how the toaster just feels like a worst of both worlds compromise.

How necessary will it be really? Just another battery drain?

I'd rather have analogue triggers return.

All depends on the implementation from Nvidia i guess. It's their custom chip design. I would imagine that Nintendo are largely leaving that part of the work up to Nvidia. If they can get RT to run nicely it's a win for everyone. From developers' standpoint rays tracing is a lot easier to code than traditional lighting, it's just always been too expensive.

And yeah I hope they bring back analogue triggers too. The biggest miss on Switch imo

I remember back when they did a similar video for the Switch 1. I feel like there’s a lot more speculation in this video though because some critical details of the Switch 2 aren’t known yet. Clock speeds, memory, specific DLSS features that may make 4K more feasible. But overall a grounded realistic preview like they always do

Seems like that rumour came from Dr. Serkan Toto. It's pretty solid then. He also seems to confirm that there was a Pro Switch model in the works that got scrapped at the last minute, as a lot of people speculated. Exciting.

Necrofelipe made some more solid predictions. Things are shaping up for a reveal, and I suspect it might come sooner than people think.

I make the prediction myself, it doesn’t mean it will be something absolute:

• Announcement in March
• Launch in June
• More powerful than the Steam Deck
• Continues hybrid
• Improved Joy-Con
• Backwards compatible with Switch 1
• Improved UI with themes and music
• Support for DLSS, Wi-Fi 6, 12GB of RAM, HDR and initially with 256GB of storage
• Suggested Price of R$3,599 ($400)
• 3D Mario, Pokémon and Metroid as main lineup

This is a prediction, nothing special

Here is one prediction for you.

MIG cart just f'ed up back compatibility, big time. So don't expect the Switch 2 to be able to play originals carts. Nintendo now forced to go back to the drawing board and possibly delay launch.

Honestly I never expected Switch 2 to support cart based back compat. I have a feeling it will support digital only. It'll be too much hassle for them to support different cartridge standards. But who knows? Imagine if it did happen and they had to redo the hardware completely.

Necro Filipe pulled together a specs list based on insider reports. All still rumours, but he's got a good track record with Nintendo leaks.

These specifications above, if achieved, even if there is no processing clock speed per hour, would already allow the system to surpass Valve's Steam Deck, in addition to guaranteeing gaming performance beyond that delivered by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 cards with technologies with DLSS, Reflex and Ray Reconstruction.

The 8-inch screen would allow an increase in resolution in portable mode, currently available in HD (720p) on the current console, to 1080p (Full HD) on the new system.

The 512 GB internal storage is a great way for the company to handle current generation releases on the system, since there are several demanding games today with much higher quality textures than those present in current Nintendo Switch games. It is worth remembering, however, that this is the expected size ceiling, and the company may opt for an “entry-level” device with 256 GB.

The biggest unknown here is still the clock speeds. But 4nm 239 would be amazing. Undocked roughly 2tf and docked around 4tf. That puts it roughly at PS4 speeds when undocked, but with some added juice from DLSS features that should let it perform quite a bit above.

Nintendo has a great track record for BC. The DS could play Gameboy carts and Its own carts. This will do absolutely nothing to their plans for BC.

Edit: not worried about clock speeds and all that other jargon.

Just release the Kraken.

Nintendo does have a track record of bungling a new console release. Hopefully the Furokawa guy is successful in the transition.

What I was implying is they can allow Digital but I can totally see cart BC going bye bye if the MIG works as described.

Example can play NES, SNES & N64 on Switch but there is no option to use your carts from back then.
