I moved into a new flat and my landlady had an ADSL account with Telkom. My company says they'll pay for my internet at home if I switch to AfriHost. I've purchased another product from AfriHost on the company's account (100GB DSL - line NOT managed by AfriHost). This new product is active. Time to switch...
I asked my landlady to cancel the Telkom package. She's not technical so I don't know if she told Telkom to just close the data portion (what I want - good) or the whole ADSL line (in which case no one is managing the line - bad). Telkom said they needed one month's notice so it'll be cancelled at the end of this month (July 2016).
In the meantime I've configured the AfriHost credentials on my router (just AfriHost username and password really) and the router is able to connect to AfriHost - its status is connected and an AfriHost human said he saw the connection present on their side so everything looks good. BUT...
I can't get anything past the router! If I try ping 8.8.8.8 I get 'Destination net unreachable' and all DNS lookups fail even though the router auto-configs to use AfriHost's servers. The AfriHost support technician checked everything he could think of on my router over the phone with me and couldn't find anything wrong. The are no static routes configured and no funny firewall stuff. It's like my router has a rule blocking all outbound traffic but I can't find it.
One thing the technician flagged was that the router's gateway IP was set to 41.x.x.x - I can't remember it exactly but it was a Neotel address. The technician sounded surprised but said they do use Neotel. It's auto-configured when my router connects to AfriHost so there's not really much I can do.
This doesn't seem to be a speed issue (nothing gets out at all) or a noise issue since the connection to AfriHost doesn't drop at all. It's just data traffic that's a problem. If I switch back to the Telkom ADSL account everything is fine again (the Telkom account is still active this month). I did speak to Telkom and the technician there told me I just needed to change the username/password to AfriHost's which I did.
Anyone have any other ideas what may be wrong?
