Hi there,

Currently I am about 3 KM from my DSLAM. This isn't too bad (should be able to hold at least 6mb when we get upgraded) however I see quite a few Telkom boxes very near (<1km) to my house. Are these DSLAM's? I don't have any pictures, but maybe Telkom have since built them in? What should I do?

Thanks

dslam is white( quite bigger then blue telkom box), telkom exchange is blue, white boxes gives you internet :P

How would one go about asking them to move you to one of those white/cream boxes?
There is one near to our house.
Yet my attenuation is still 57/58 which suggests I use the main Bergvliet Exchange, in Bergvliet (this one) +/- 3 KMs away

Ah. Thought as much - but I wasn't 100% sure it had anything to with the rest of that installation.

Not that I've even seen one like that - or remotely like it. Maybe I need to go to the city more, lol.

/me recalls having a good chuckle watching a skinny linesman's struggle getting such a battery off and on the back of his bakkie :)
anyhow, on topic -i doubt the consumer has any control on which DSLAM they get put on

I'm a little confused by all these pictures if I'm being honest. I live in Century City in Cape Town and I am like 300 m from my exchange yet my exchange looks nothing like anything mentioned above. The exchange by my apartment is a huge room, about 12 square meters in size and I have been inside it. Not sure why this came about but the Telkom technician called me when there was a problem connecting my line and explained everything to me even though I had a massive blank stare on my face.

Yep, that is when Telkom can get lucky and rent such a space in a complex. Smaller rooms are also called Node Rooms. If they cannot get such space they will use the external cabinets as per the pic above.

PS: the OP specifically mentioned "boxes" which implies the external cabinets...
