Hi alls!
I'm on the sposedly 10MB enabled exchange behind the Fruit & Veg center (1.7 KM distance), already experienced 8MB real life speed until it all broke down last October. Reason given was networking troubles due to an overpopulated DSLam. Eventually they switched me down to 5MB but internet was still crap. Since a while everything seems to be better so I'm wondering if they finally upgraded their servers or did something else to better their service. But I fear things might go bad again as soon as I ask them to turn up my speed.

That's why I'm asking you, fellow suburbians, what's your speed? Should I dare to ask them to accelerate my line?

What's your line stats? If your line's stabilized & stats are good, then there's no reason not to try !

Device Info

Firmware Version: 1.3.6 Build 100825 Rel.68770n
Hardware Version: TD-W8960N v1 0x00000001
This information reflects the current status of your DSL connection.
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 512
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 5024
LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Default Gateway: 196.210.152.1(ppp0)
Primary DNS Server: 168.210.2.2
Secondary DNS Server: 196.14.239.2
System Running time: 18 day(s) 22:35:29

Is that it?

Find another exchange over here

Really good resource site for 10MB exchanges :) and wish i knew if the owner is on mybb as he should get an article written :p

Check the list as i am sure it will help.

As to your ADSL stats, what you posted above won't help much, look for a page on your ADSL modem that shows SNR Margin etc. Then paste those values here :)

Edit: i googled, look for this page , there we go

I'd also like to know.

I'm ~2.5KM away. Initially I was upgraded to 8Mbit but that was too high as I was DC'ing every minute or so. I downgraded to 6Mbit and then it would DC once every 2 or so days, so I left it as is. Then things got bad (read: everything just broke) and my dad downgraded us to 2Mbits :/

Edit: Eish. My upstream margain is negative! Haha this isn't good. Oh well. Atleast it's still up (touch wood). I see my modulation finally changed to ADSL2+

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 512
Ds Rate (Kbps) 2045
US Margin -22
DS Margin 20
Trained Modulation ADSL_2plus
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 47
US Line Attenuation 29
Peak Cell Rate 1207 cells per sec
CRC Rx Fast 1
CRC Tx Fast 0
CRC Rx Interleaved 0
CRC Tx Interleaved 0
Path Mode Fast Path

I think you upgrade then you tell us how it went :P I'll easily upgrade back to 4 again seeing as I know it's gonna work. Don't know about the higher speeds just yet.

I am in Table View (Blaauwberg road near the ocean side), but I haven't got 10Mbit yet. My line stats say I am about 150m from the exchange though and I get very stable 4mbit. Should I phone and ask for an upgrade?

I'm told my line supports 10MB/s - but Telkom say my line will upgrade automatically when enabled... :wtf:

Also in the area.

Paste your line stats and modulation info (sync mode) and we can see

I hardly notice the difference between 4 or 10 megs anymore.
Same. I'm on 10Mbps, and besides for youtube buffering (assuming I'm using an unshaped account, which I can't do all the time anyway) or heavy downloading, there's barely a difference. In fact I think anything from 2Mbps upwards is adequate for feeling the 'speed of broadband' while browsing general websites... anything more than that becomes useful only for streaming media and stuff like that. Even with 10mbps, a typical shaped ISP account and most web servers won't allow you to max your line out all the time. 10Mbps is great, but it's not essential so if you haven't been upgraded yet, don't be O.C.D about getting that done like I was...

Well, in the short time I was on 8MB I really really enjoyed it. Then in mid October something in the exchange station broke and all hell broke lose. So, almost a year later now and they still have me on 5MB. It works fine but still not as smooth as the 8MB did.

@ Yuu: Can we do that? Moving from one exchange to another? I think Tekom figures out which one is closest to your home and puts you on that automatically. Although that exchange is the only one I have seen around Table View anyway. It's very easy to see from far, with its 2 antenna towers. Anyway, the DSLam I'm on (Table View 9 I guess) is the only DSLam that can handle hispeed connections (> 1MB) in the whole Blaauwberg area, according to my Telkom techie. And that one is (or was) totally congested. Also, I just checked the map on the site you linked. The big exchange building isn't even it it! Me's confuzzled now.

@ Fragtion: Unfortunately I'm doing much more than just general browsing. I'm spending lots of time in Second Life (servers in San Francisco) and also have a lot of "streaming media and stuff like that" going. In fact I'm on an unshaped account .... and I want to make the best of it.

I live near the Mc Donalds (corner of Wood Drive/Ravenswood Rd) and have been running 8Mbit for a few months now.

I stay in Table View, just after Boy De Goede Circle.
During 10Mbps testing, I got 10Mbps - but since been dropped down to 8Mbps, stable sync :)

I was updated to 10M and it resulted in a crash of the line.... I am now on 6 M and it is stable and reliable...

I'm at Jansen RD.

Regards

Just phoned Telkom, second time got through to a techie who sounded like he knows whats going on. Apparently my exchange does not yet support 10Mbit, so I wait.

Yeah, I' not far off BDGoede Circle, so I should be good at 8MB again. Will give Telkom a call, they must bump me up.
