Hi Guys

TLDR version:
Have no clue what is on the market. Need a new 8" or 9" tablet. Decent screen, 3G, Wifi, and acceptable performance. Max R3000
.

So I've neglected to keep track of what tablets are on the market for the past 5 years or so because we just always had the iPad 2 lying around although we barely used it. That changed drastically about a year ago with our 3yo daughter.

But now the iPad is in its final moments after taking quite the beating from a toddler in the past year. Cracked screen, dented covers, horrendous battery life (1 hour max), charging that only happens at certain port/cable angles. And it is soooooo slow lately compared to browsing from my phone.... the list goes on.

I would like to replace the tablet now but have no clue what to look for. I see stuff ranging from R799 to R14'000 :wtf:. With the daughter using the tablet more I also found myself using it a lot more to browse Reddit, MyBB Forums and watch Youtube videos lately. So it will be used for more than Peppa Pig videos and Connect the Dots.

Always get good advice(anecdotal and factual) from the members here so thought I would rather ask here. And you guys always know where the specials are at except for Guzzle and Friday morning MASSIVE SAVINGS!! threads.

Enough talk. Here are my requirements/thoughts.

Tablet will mainly be used for educational and entertainment purposes for our now 4yo daughter. The iPad hasn't yet, but the new one will definitely be used in the car for traveling entertainment for the kids.
Secondary purpose will be for my viewing, browsing and forum-ing pleasure.
Wife will occasionally check her Vleisboek and Pinterest stuff.

I find the iPad2 a bit too big (I know it is old, thick and heavy which doesn't help) so would like something slightly smaller. 7" tablets are too small again for my liking. So a 8" or 9" would be preferable.

Screen quality is important for me. I'm a sucker for clean crisp text on forums and the browser. Also for vibrant and popping colours while watching media. Good viewing angles are also nice for the wife always peeping at your videos and pictures from the side or over your shoulder.

Must not be sluggish. It doesn't have to be a super computer and there will not be massive multitasking done on it. But I hate unresponsive and slow gadgets.

Battery life is not so much a deal breaker for me. With kids we are never too far from home or the car charger but would like to at least get a few hours of browsing and the odd video or educational app session before needing a charge.

Must have 3G and WiFi.

I would obviously like to get away as cheap as possible but don't mind paying slightly more if it is really worth it. I would say budget is R3000 max. Budget, not target!

Thank you in advance.

Speak to @Faniedry. He has a brand spanking new one he might be selling

Aaah. Only saw that now. Lucky bugger.

Although 10" a bit big for my liking. I suspect that is the main reason, apart from toddler clumsiness, why the iPad took such a beating in the last year. It was too big, bulky and heavy for my daughter which meant she was prone to bumping it into stuff and occasionally dropping it. She is much more careful now with it but I would still like something a bit more manageable and mobile for both her and myself.

I am not an expert in media consuming market, but if 8" is exactly on your spot, speed and screen quality is essential, then you should settle on nothing less than iPad Mini (from Mini 2 to the current model).

There is no much improvements between Mini 2 and Mini 4, you can get Mini 2 at low price. Mini 2 has retina display (1.5kx2k pixels), it is the first Apple device with 64-bit CPU I think, so it supports the latest operating system. It is blatantly fast comparing to iPad2, I had an occasion to compare very recently.

Only cellular version has GPS receiver.

Mini 2 SA cellular operator support for LTE:
- Model A1490 - all except Telkom (no band 40)
- Model A1491 - all

Mini 2 second hand?

I'll definitely have a look at classifieds tonight. I have no problem with buying 2nd hand.

Cheers for the advice and recommendation. iPad2 has served us well so know it is quality stuff. Their current pricing versus my budget is just not on the same planet.

Android tablets seem to get stuck on certain firmwares and that's it.

8" tabs are just about as easy to find as a Springbok win at this stage.... Urgh.

Say I would settle for a 7". What would you guys recommend?

Are tabs like the Lenovo or even cheaper Vodacom Smart Tabs worth it or should I just stick to something like the Galaxy Tab A?

Thanks for all the advice so far.

There's a iPad Air 16 GB in the classifieds, IMHO by far the best bang for buck you'll get for R3k even though it's a bit bigger than what you prefer. Get a decent cover for it and you are sorted. The iPad Air is by no means old yet, in fact the latest 9.7 so called budget iPad apparently shares a lot of components with it. If it wasn't only 16 GB I would have snatched it up myself at that price.

Keep in mind the age of the tech you buy - with non removable batteries in devices, I would be hesitant to buy anything older than 2 years
