Hi guys.
I've started studying again and got a looooooot to read online. I have a laptop but looking for something more portable and easy to hold for extended periods.
I had a Galaxy Note Tab 2014 edition a couple years back and loved it until it got expropriated.
It seems like the iPad 6th gen is the one to go for at the moment? Cheap @ R6k and pretty powerful.
I'm a Windows/Android guy but don't mind iOS for this type of thing.
Any others?
Budget is a little as possible but I don't want some slow and 720p thing. Neither should I be spending R15k.
Thanks.

Have look at the Lenovo Tab 4 10". Runs Android 7 and specs look pretty good. Otherwise the Huawei T3 10". I'm also looking to get one for my studies this year. Will probably get the Lenovo for myself.

Can’t go wrong with the iPad.

It is the best tablet on the market for a reason.

Pro if you can, but not required. The previous gen models still floating around.

Tx all. Got the iPad. I’m not an Apple fan but so far impressed with the device for the money. Didn’t think I’d ever say that about an apple product.

Out of interest, thinking of buying a tablet for my mother due to her failing eyesight, which one did you decide on?

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 10.5" 256GB Android 8 (Amazon)

Obviously not cheap, but a lot less than an equivalent iPad Pro 10.5, and the S pen is included.

Cost USD600 + Taxes + Shipping, about R10 000. I think that I was lucky wrt price and FX rate.

Just the 6th gen 9.7 inch 32GB model @ R5999.
It ticked all the boxes and is very polished. Would love a Pro 2 but not in a million years for that price (R14k).

The Androids were all disappointing besides the Samsung S3 / S4 but those are all over R10k.

Having owned Xperia Z2 Tab, Samsung Tab A 9,7 and Tab S2, no one does tablets like Apple does. Now have a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5. You can find these now for around R8000 with LTE.

Got the kids the same model for school. Well worth it.

Looking for something a little more modest on my budget...3k max say
Anything remotely decent avail?

So you went from decent ( sony, even though KitKat was meh) downgraded to the tab A, then upgraded to a better tab S... and then compare it to an ipad.
Hope you went to an Ipad 2, then ipad mini 1 , then the pro :P

unliked your post .......
Sony, mine.
Tab A, son's.
Tab S2, wife's

went straight to iPad Pro. no regrets.

I know nothing about iPads...

Can an iPad do everything an Android tablet can? Are you forced into the Apple ecosystem? Or can you happily watch Youtube, netflix and download free tablet games? What about web browsing and video playback?

Any DRM or some other reason you won't be able to place certain media files? Do you have use itunes etc and have unlimited internet bandwidth to even use it properly?

It's the usual IOS vs Android stuff.
You can do more with Android for sure.
The iPad 6th gen does everything I need it to do and is actually spec'd very well for the price. It's slim pickings when it comes to Android tablets. Couldn't really find a decent equivalent for R6k.

my iPad 2 from 2012 is still running at home, get a full day battery life out of it minimum, has never let me down once.
I have never let the battery get below 50%. Charge it up every chance I get.
Have the latest iPad here at work and YOH does that CPU chow battery  I am going to need to purchase a power bank to velcro to the back of the thing, do not even get a full day out of it. Both iPads at work are the same so I don't think I bought a dud

mmm am I right in reading that the ipad 6th gen 32GB (2018) has only 2GB RAM?

The very old (2015) Samsung Tab S2 mentioned here has 3GB RAM

Disclaimer: I am the satisfied user of a 3GB RAM Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016) S-Pen which received an update to Android 8.1 last month...
Indeed it only has 2GB ram. I thought it is known by now that IOS gets by on less. Everything on the iPad is super smooth, way smoother than my Android phone with double the RAM. Even after factory reset.

Both have their Pro's.
