Tablets: Sony s vs Tab 2

I have the Sony Xperia Tablet S and i'm very happy. Also on the same MTN contract with the 500MB.

The Good:
It's fast. All apps and games flies on it. No problems with 1080p movies.
Its got a good screen. Not retina display quality mind you, but still impressive. The resolution is not the best but the quality of the display is good. Natural colours.
Its waterproof! A big plus for me as a dad. My little one can play his games on there with a cooldrink in hand without me stressing myself to death.
It's got a great IR remote control app pre-installed and a built in IR receiver. MUCH better than the one built into my S4. It supports all the TV's in my house (Sansui and Samsung) as well as my Philips Blueray players, Sony Amp and even supports DSTV PVR which is a bonus. It can also learn IR signals from other remotes.
It comes pre-installed with Android ICS,but the Jellybean update is out (havent updated yet). Not 100% Android, but the Sony UI and interface is close enough to stock android. Not too many bells and whistles. The stuff that Sony added only adds to the xperience rather than subtract which is important.

The bad:
Nut using standard mini USB for charging and connectivity. Using some Sony port. This means that if you wish to buy HDMI adapter or USB OTG adapter you will have to buy the expensive Sony version.
Which brings me to point number 2. Sony accesories and covers are very scarce in South Africa. I had to buy an Ipad cover (which almost fits (it does the job, but could have been better).
For waterproofing they use a loose little cap to cover the Sony port. This cap can easily get lost when taking it off to charge or connect to PC (via USB) for instance.
It doesnt support phonecalls which isnt really much of a negative point really as this is a tablet afterall, not a phone. It does however come with 3G and an SMS app pre-installed. So yes you can SMS with it.

All in all I'm very happy with my Sony tablet. Prefer this for playing games and websurfing compared to my Galaxy S4 as the screen size is so much bigger.

I didnt know the tablet S was water resistant either.
Most tablets use a proprietary connector for charging though so it isnt that big a deal.
I heard the last update for the tablet S broke the ability to root it, Im sure that doesnt matter to most but I like fiddling with custom roms :p

I did put in my order for the Sony S, now just to wait for the migration to get sorted.

How long does it take to migrate from a voice to a data package on MTN?

I have 0 confidence in our local MTN shops.

"Sir, give us 24hrs and we will have you sorted!"
"I have put in your request, it will be 24hrs, but give it 48hrs just to be safe."
"Everything is going a-okay, but you need to come in next week."
"Sorry sir, there is no stock in SA, we will let you know ASAP once we receive stock."

That has been my experience with our local store.
Go to Sasolburg MTN franchise, they help me with the same problem within an hour...

I'm now at the second excuse with out local store, made my request to migrate and get the tablet two days ago and still have not heard anything.
:(

I see you in the Wes Transvaal.

I'm sorry to inform you that you are 20+ years behind. You'll only get the device in around 20 years time or so. :p

So you like...? This is one of the reasons I joined the Forum...I was looking into this very same Tablet for my kid...if I remember it's got wi-fi and Bluetooth...? What more does a young child need..it's more for her than me..I just can't afford an iPad and she uses my iPhone like her personal toy..;) It has more GB also..?

You ask a lot of questions? ;)

Yes, comparing it to my older Huawei S7 Slim it is a beast.
The quad core processor is snappy and I have noticed no lag to speak of. The Tegra gpu also renders beautifully and I'm quite satisfied with my purchase.
Yes, Bluetooth and wifi is supported.

The only downside is that accesories are crazy expensive, have a look on Bid-or-Buy is you need a pouch or case.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it has got more GB also". Another reason I went with this tablet is that you can add up to 128Gb sd-card, while the Samsung only has up to 32Gb capacity IIRC.

My four yr old boy is using mine most of the time. The guest mode is perfect for this as you can create a custom account for the kid with his own wallpaper and apps on the screen and lock all other functions such as internet and all settings that you dont want the kids to mess with. Even if the free games takes the child to the internet to download extra contents the tablet will not allow this.
Being splashproof also helps. It gives me some peace of mind that in the worst case scenario that he spills water or whatever on the tablet it should still be ok.

Tons of free games on Google Play. Many aimed at young kids. Also some nice educational games.

Managed to get a pouch yet?
Figured out how to check your data usage on the MTN contract?

They have pouches on Bid-or-Buy, but they are a bit pricey. I'll keep an eye out for one, maybe I should have a look on eBay as well.
