Yeah the sausages are a challenge, I use British style sausage meat from a butchery which works well enough. It's not really 100% but whatever.

erm maybe.... Just call around, it can be a mission to find odd things like that here. I still can't find a butcher's in ssw that stocks sweetbreads. And real lard is impossible.

This is great, can not wait for them to come to JHB. I'm little bit confused, what do you mean had. Like there were 2 shops and now they closed. Sorry English, is not my mother tongue.
Going back to American brands, I would really like to see Ihop and Red Robin here. I liked both so much. Starbucks makes some very nice energy drinks, that we can not get in SA. Was drinking them every morning, while there. Was not that crazy about In n Out and Carl's Jr. Not bad burgers, but nothing out of this world. I prefer BK. Biggest disappointment Taco Time and Cheesecake Factory.

I've never done Panchos, I couldn't compare. I can't say I've actually had decent Mexican/Tex Mex anywhere in SA tbh, outside of my own home :D
 
There is a nice place in Rosebank mall that serves decent mexican. Otherwise I make my own. Had a half Mexican room mate once who got me hooked on the stuff. Think I ate soft tortilla tacos twice a week for about 2 years after discovering them. Only thing that grates me is how much buying Tortilla's costs in SA. Its dirt cheap to make from scratch but very labour intensive I guess. We make our own mostly as we now have to be gluten free but before we substituted Roti's succesfully which I could find cheaper in JHB.

Mexican places don't tend to last though. I have seen many people try to start them up and they invariably close down. Not enough people in SA who appreciate it I guess. I think the best bet is a restuarant that serves a variety of foods that includes some mexican currently expanding their menu to be more full mexican. Places like Spur, mug n bean, etc already have a few mexican items on the menu, just not enough.

we also make MExican food every now and then at home, but I can never get soft taco's right.

Spur's Mexican food is the worst thing in the world. Mugg N Bean is a bit better, I actually like Mugg N Bean's menu quite a lot. But most places with Mexican items on the menu aren't worth talking about. It's like the machine in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that when they spend hours describing how to make tea, it produced "a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea."

Do you mean tortillas? A taco is a crunchy shell. Tortillas are pretty easy to make:

But lard is tough to come by here. Vegetable shortening will substitute.

How I wish Greenacres was bulldozed to the ground and Baywest was built there rather.
