So you reckon they should rent ( or buy ) multiple expensive servers to cater for the load just for one day or maybe a few? Think WoW when the recent expansion was launched?
People need to get to grips with the fact that its now christmas time and everyone is looking at takealot for a deal... i think its unfair to expect them to invest in extra hardware when in the greater scheme its not really needed. A server can ONLY handle so many requests.
Edit: Go to a mall now and see how frustrated you get.. surely malls by now realise, that by this period, they need more space ( see what i did there? )

Part of doing business is predicting and being ready to cope with increased, and conversely reduced, demand. That's exactly why brick'n'mortar stores take on additional seasonal staff. I'm sure takealot lost millions of rands in sales today due to their downtime. Having sufficient capacity available is the opportunity cost, i.e. it gives them capacity to service huge demand. Without it, they won't make the sales, the customers go elsewhere and their brand saunters south.

Except it's 2014 and things like Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure and Cloudflare exist all to prevent this type of situation. You can't rent extra space in a mall by the hour but you can rent extra computing resources by the hour so your argument is flawed.

AND its cheaper in many cases - I know the lead dev of one of the country's larger sites that recently went from self-owned infrastructure to Azure and cut their monthly hosting/bandwidth bill in half, plus got an infinitely scalable solution. New site instances spin up and down as needed, and everything is load balanced.
