Takealot has a problem with 3rd party sellers.

They are not the checkers sadly. There is a sold by on the website that tells you who you're buying from.
Takealot handle the logistics for a fee
Funny - everything I buy from Amazon says Amazon on the bill, likewise Takealot.

The third party seller name is visible. You'll see Sold By ... thing is trying to find something takealot actually stocks and sells. Not just put in a box and send

In the beginning it wasn't, they seem to have reluctantly added it and often its just a single word. Amazon and other retailers give you the visit shop etc links as well and its far more obvious.

The CPA also does cover this scenario but only on the liability side. They refer to a joint responsibility. Im sure if you were willing to spend money on legal fees they would be held accountable and the whole washing their hands with the terms wouldn't work so well.

Might be on the bank statement, but the order page and invoice show the seller. Takealot just handled the sale.
Though yes they do have issues with this kak and should take responsibility to clean it up. 951553290.jpg1761354752.jpg

I see that... under Takealot's branding.

Takealot is offering an item for sale and you're giving them money in exchange for the item. I'm really not sure why anyone would be so keen to absolve them from responsibility when they alone deicide which items to market.

No absolving them. Notice the next part of my post.
They just point out that they are not the seller just the go through point. We saw this same issue with BoB back yonder

My biggest gripe is that they don't publish negative reviews.

What a load of **** is that

They do publish negative reviews??

Not all of them. You can find a few posts on here where people tried to post negative reviews and they were rejected. Some were even quite bland.

Final Recommendations for Retail Platforms

  1. Prompt Action on Reports: Take immediate action upon receiving reports of counterfeit goods. This includes investigating claims, removing infringing listings, and banning sellers who repeatedly list counterfeit products.
  2. Collaborate with Brands: Establish open lines of communication with trademark owners for efficient reporting and resolution of counterfeit goods issues.
  3. Monitor and Adapt: Keep abreast of legal developments and industry standards regarding counterfeit goods. Adjust policies and practices as necessary to stay within the bounds of the law and industry expectations.
  4. Educate Sellers and Consumers: Provide clear guidelines and educational resources for sellers on your platform regarding the sale of genuine goods. Similarly, inform consumers about identifying and reporting counterfeit products.
  5. Consider Technological Solutions: While not necessarily a legal requirement, investing in technology to detect counterfeit listings can be a proactive step towards a cleaner marketplace. Evaluate the costs and benefits, and consider seeking contributions from concerned brands.

Shops like PnP also still or used to keep stock for others and would sell that stock. But PnP was still responsible for the sales.

A late friend of mine used to stock certain WC supermarkets and petrol stations with imported confetionery products. They wouldn't really buy his stock but sell on his behalf. Sold by x means x is responsible for making sure the items are legal.

It seems that international regulations are pushing to make marketplaces more responsible for what they sell as per for example the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) which requires platforms to remove illegal products quickly, verify sellers, and provide transparency reports.

If the European Commission introduces such rules then sooner or later SA will follow suit as will the UK and the ANZAC countries.

Terms and conditions will not protect the Takealots of this world. It's a just a matter of time.

Takealot has a huge quality control problem.

I found a 3rd party seller listing lead cords as 10m, 20m and 30m lengths. When I checked the images, they show as 10ft, 20ft and 30ft. The text decrepitions claim both sizes, which is obviously wrong. I reported the issue, but see that the items are still for sale with the wrong lengths listed.

Yeah the 3rd parties have turned it into a cesspool. I often find some the stores who have other shops have inflated prices on Takealot compared to their own stores.

I think thats fair though as selling on Takealot cost quite a bit so its likely the markup for the extra costs.

Does Takelot sell any of their stuff? Or is it all third party sellers from large distributors eg Core to mom and pop's?

In the old days, we had TheShoppingMatrix and later Take2/Raru and those operated like large department stores, they kept all the stocl or they ordered it from distributors and sometimes they even imported things from Amazon for you.

You see if they take reporting of fraudulent goods this seriously they are not performing due diligence and are likely aiding and abetting fraudsters and counterfeiters. They have safe harbour but they have a duty to act quickly to verify listings. They take the profits from these sales, so they should be employing people to make sure the items are legit - as is reasonable. But a R500 10TB SSD can't be legitimate especially as when it looks like an OEM Sandisk and 10ft is not 10m, and such listings should be pulled and verification should be enforced.

Is everything you buy at Checkers made by checkers? I am sure they use supplier and resellers for a few of their products. Just like Takealot.

3rd party sellers are ruining takealot. Ordered this umbrella. It looks nothing like the picture.
Sellers are selling random **** on the same listings.

One guy got one with a flashlight embedded in the handle 🤦‍♂️

"As described and as a surprise bonus... it has a flashlight embedded in the handle.Limited colours though."
