I did it during checkout.

Tried that and I got an error.
Then restarted the checkout from scratch and it was preloaded in the cart, ie total less the voucher.

What's the official way to load a voucher on your account?

Just to be clear I'm referring to a voucher not a discount code.

Login with your existing address and user password.
Go to Your Account
Click on Enter A Gift Voucher Code
Enter the codes on your voucher. Once you’ve successfully entered the code the amount of the voucher will be loaded as a credit on your profile.
Credit will automatically be used when you checkout.
