Takealot vs Makro order delivery

With Black Friday and the festive season approaching, online shoppers want to know that their orders will arrive on time and in perfect condition.

In the build-up to the shopping weeks ahead, MyBroadband tested the online order and delivery process of two of South Africa's big retail players: Takealot and Makro.

Never had an issue with takealot personally. Biggest problem I can personally think of was a lack of stock that they only indicated three days after I ordered. Always get my deliveries on time, or before time.

Also, some of Makro's estimated delivery dates aren't communicated well. I've seen two very similar products, one with a 2-5 day shipping, and the other with 21-day shipping. Surely to compete online this should be more specific?

Makro has delivery issues, and an interesting pricing structure if you order from more than one supplier in the same invoice.

My takealot experiences are generally as bad as Makro.
I have done well over 300 orders since the Take2 days but its progressively slipped in delivery times over the years.
It used to be that if you ordered something listed as "in stock JHB or CT" then it would arrive the next day.
Regardless of status these days it takes around a week for any order to arrive.
Im assuming they wait until they have x amount of parcels for an area and only then dispatch them.

Can attest to the fact that Makro's online ordering system is a mess.

Won't make that mistake again any time soon.

Even their in-store collection option is set up in a very unprofessional and chaotic manner.

It's like they are not even trying to make a success of it.

In contrast, Takealot has never let me down.

I have found that a few of Takealot's "outside" suppliers don't always live up to their promises - and I believe that Takelot themselves should come down much harder on these suppliers (like offering the product at a much more discounted price - as a sort of 'punishment'). Otherwise, I agree that Takelot wins.

or that these third party suppliers aren’t necessarily vat registered and have a hard time generating invoices etc.

I hate the trend of 3rd-party sellers on sites like Takealot. I generally order from an online retailer I trust and am familiar with their service quality. Third party just adds a whole layer of possible issues to the experience.

That being said I've found Takealot's packaging for books to be terrible. Orders arrive with books damaged/dented due to poor packaging.

A few weeks ago I ordered an item from Takealot shown as in stock in Cape Town at around 7am and chose to have it delivered to the Woodstock pick-up point. AFAIR it was shown as 2-3 days for delivery. At around noon I was notified it was ready for collection, and had it in my hands around 6 hours after ordering. I too have had bad experiences with Takealot 3rd party sellers and am very wary of those now.

Takealot has been great. Makro, took over a month to not deliver, then told I could collect it from another store 30 minutes further away. Finally delivered, but again over a month. This for something that had to fetch out of their store... was a weird experience.

Makro blows my mind at how useless they are at the online game... They have the DC footprint and product range to hurt takealot but they just don't seem to be arsed..

I've ordered from Makro exactly twice, both times they messed the delivery up royally - never again...

Takealot - maybe 1 in 10, there's a glitch (like a day late)

Hopefully your order will finally arrive. I bought a table on the Makro online store, the table was to be delivered to Shayandima, Limpopo, I had put my niece's name as a contact person on the other side. Long story short, the table did not arrive after 10 working days and I started following up.

The Makro staff were not interested until I asked for the third party's contact details, who insisted the table was delivered. Even sending me a signed Way Bill. Except the signature on the Way Bill did not match my niece's signature but they had provided proof of delivery and that was that, until I asked them to send a vehicle tracker's report showing that their vehicle indeed stopped in front of my mother's house.

The table was delivered the following day, being confirmed by my niece who actually received it this time. I wasn't going to let fraud go so I tried to report the fraud or attempted fraud with the third party and they were uninterested.

Again, I hope you receive your order.
