You need Adobe Reader version 8.1. If you want to stop your reader from doing an auto update, on your computer go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe. Now here you will find a folder called "Updater". It may have some number after it like Updater5, Updater6 or something similar. Just delete this folder.

Ah, I think I had to reboot before Reader started up properly.

But on to the next problem - it won't let me save my return, I get the error "Cannot process content of type text/html; charset = utf-8". And my IPR5 data isn't filled in

Aaargh! I tried to open my return in IE instead of Firefox, to try to get around the content type error, and then it complains that I don't have the latest version of Adobe Reader!

This is ridiculously frustrating!

"Please ensure that you have entered a valid tax reference number"

Im entering the reference number that appears on my IRP5.
Its format is 10 numerics. That correct?

It's a 10-digit number, yes.

Keep in mind that the usernames and passwords are all case sensitive...

If you log into efiling and click on the "Returns Issued" thing, you should get a line like this :

TaxPeriod: 2008 Version: 1 ITR12 Issued on 07/11/2008 Due on 23/01/2009

That's my personal tax return thingy. Seems they issued it like today...

Make sure you're not entering the IRP5 reference number, or your company reference number.
