Teacher filmed beating pupil

An Eastern Cape teacher has been filmed beating a Grade 10 pupil, the Dispatch Online reported on Wednesday.

She and the rest of the class were beaten with a stick when they failed to produce maths homework on May 8, the pupil at Ndabankulu Senior Secondary School, in Butterworth, told the website.

In the video, the Dispatch heard the teacher swearing at the pupil.

The girl's parents had reported the matter to the school.

The Dispatch Online reported that school principal Vuyani Thongo had refused to comment about what he called a "sensitive matter".

Education spokesman Loyiso Pulumani reportedly said corporal punishment was a crime and advised parents to report it to the police.

There's a difference being beaten and discipline. I'm all for discipline, but then you get teachers like this who have no control.

Quite funny, if I came home to my mum and told her I got a hiding at school, I would get scolded again. And I finished matric in 2008.
So it was always better to keep quiet about it. Point is, we always made sure our homework was done.
