Takealot versus Amazon — tech prices compared

While ordering tech products through Amazon in the US can mean a long wait for your items to arrive, a MyBroadband analysis has revealed that it is often cheaper than ordering through South African ecommerce giant Takealot.

Industry sources have told MyBroadband that Amazon is planning to launch a marketplace in South Africa.

I don't think the local Amazon products will be that much differently priced than Takealot. The dangerous part for Takealot isn't the local competition of Amazon. It is the fact that having a Amazon.co.za account makes it very easy to buy stuff in the Amazon.com store.

Amazon can kill off flea markets, tal, the whole of massmart and various other small makeshift stores
I hope that doesn’t stop them
We have been ripped off by overpriced entry level tech for too long now

Long wait time? A few days to 2 weeks max

1st time I ordered something on Amazon it took 4 weeks. About 1 week to get to South Africa and was in Aramex warehouse for another 3 weeks before they decided to deliver it.

Amazon prime's free shipping model is all that is needed assuming pricing is similar. At the moment consumers have Takealot's R450 minimum to contend with and it's a bit of a problem for daily purchasing - atleast for me. I tend to hold off until i can get over the R450 minimum.

Beyond that, if i can order something from amazon.com and return it locally i would buy a lot more from Amazon.com.

Those in the UK, how does it work when you buy from Amazon USA and need to do a return from the UK? Are there any advantages given Amazon's local presence? I Imagine third party stuff would still need to go back to the USA.

When you buy on Amazon you do so with knowing you wont be able to return it without paying

items that weigh less than 1lb (540g).

That's a typo, 1 pound is around 450g.

That was Aramex being slow, well known for it.

Also experienced that.

Takealot has never been about cheap, but convenience, quick-ish, and easy returns/refunds.

All of the best with Amazon returns and replace.
In many years of buying stuff I can count on half the fingers on one hand the items I needed to return.

Lucky maybe, or proper research before I buy maybe.

We will have to see what Amazon is like if and when they land here.
Some healthy competition can only be good for Takealot, and provide us with choice if we want it.

What, Amazon kill of their staff, can't even pee or poop. But you dont care about the staff, just your wallet. Cheap comes at a cost to someone, just not you

I've got badluck. I don't have enough fingers on my hand.

I mean in terms of time frames, not reliability.

With takealot I press a button online. The fetch it. They assess it. They refund or replace. All within a week or two.
Does it work like that if it was a 3rd party seller as well?

Asking since I do not know.

Last year I bought a Hyperice massage machine from Amazon UK. It stopped working after a week, I called them they told me to keep it and gave me a full refund. It was about £250/R5000 iirc.
