Tech prices on Takealot vs Amazon

I would assume so. And I think they put a lot of pressure on 3rd parties.

Someone made a post on it here somewhere.
I recall a recent bitch and moan post about them and a 3rd party supplier, hence my question.

Have never had bad service from Takealot, just their ‘specials’ are often not that special.
But, that goes for everyone really, buyers need to know the price and item should be.

Still, healthy competition to them cannot really harm us?

I'm not saying they are perfect. They are enormous. But personally, maybe with a hiccup here and there, it's been pretty good and effortless.

Last year I bought a Hyperice massage machine from Amazon UK. It stopped working after a week, I called them they told me to keep it and gave me a full refund. It was about £250/R5000 iirc.
But now you have to order again and wait. I guess it all depends on your needs and time frames.

P. S. I have nothing against Amazon. I just want stuff to happen as quick and effortless as possible.

Yep, fair enough. Personally I buy what I need from South Africa unless there is a huge price difference and I’m not in a hurry. For example my Sony XM4 headphones were over R1500 cheaper from Amazon US so I didn’t mind another week waiting. Another purchase was an OLED Switch for my son’s Christmas which were not available here and came 2 weeks before Christmas day.

So quite specific reasons, but generally I’ll buy from Takealot and get it next day without checking Amazon.

Or K-Swiss shoes. Although I pay a premium because they not sold in SA anymore. :crying:

You're delusional if you think Amazon is going to land here with the same prices as in the US.
Takealot/Massmart/everyshop/every other retailer all have more or less the same prices.

When you buy on Amazon you do so with knowing you wont be able to return it without paying
This is not accurate. I've returned two items over the years - both failures within warranty near the end of their warranty periods. Both times I used the SA post office for the return of the items as the cheapest available option and as soon as I provided the tracking details and copy of the payment receipt I was refunded for both 1) The post office cost and 2) The item price paid. These were both items not from 3rd party sellers and Amazon sold/fulfilled.

Depends on the item. Almost everything I've purchased on Amazon has been cheaper than local distribution. Noone would be purchasing from Amazon if it were cheaper and available locally.

For other items there's some interesting innovation ie. with books. Amazon, for many books, actually print to order as opposed to holding stock of the books.

Black friday should be a bit more interesting with them around. Especially with their own products.

They also have Prime Day once a year (it's actually next week) where you get a shed load of things cheaper. Especially Amazon's own stuff like Kindles and Echo dots etc.

Where talking Amazon here ...against Takelot.... competition? Amazon will simply buy Takelot, why spend exstra to create a distribution center ect....it's already been done....thanks Takelot, we will be taking it from here....

Yes but Amazon SOUTH AFRICA isn't going to be magically cheaper, and likely you'll find Amazon US will still beat them.

Local licensing, distribution, support channels and warranties all cost money.

Worst investment ever considering Takealot is running at a massive loss.

Small savings aside, don't trust your order to SAPO....I waited 4 months for a simple UPS package to reach me!....battered, opened and probed by the indolent looting customs cadres and not properly resealed!

Why would Amazon spend crown to buy an entity that is making a loss, and has a completely different distribution model and system to Amazon?

They would rather setup a whole new thing in the country, and still have Takealot as a client (since the vast majority of Takealot is hosted in AWS from what I know)
