Actually they acted in the direction to depreciate Rand. Couple souces have mentioned that. Banks were acting in conspiracy to overthrown Zuma for many years. Zuma was introducing new business players from China, Russia and India (Guptas are only few). International bankers protect business of the closed elite which is ruling this world. Any business which is violating their supremacy is eliminated. What you see in mass media reflects their main goal - public perception is created to facilitate changes. The last attempt to unseat Zuma failed last year. When action against banks was announced, Rand started strenthening and this was continuous trend till now. It shows that there are investors outside close elite who are interested doing business in South Africa.
