I would like to warn newcomers to Telkom not to pay for a month service when ordering 3 GB Internet late in the month. (This does not apply to the DSL Line which is charged pro rata.)

I had my DSL line installed on 28 Sept and was so far happy with Telkom. I then ordered 3 GB Internet also from Telkom and made a point of asking if the period runs from order date to order date or from the first of the month to the first of the month. I was told by a very nice (and other ways knowledgeable) lady my 3 Gig would run from the 28th to the 28th. When the first R1800 bill arrived I found out they charged me R218.42 (Ex VAT) for the 2 days left in September and another R218.42 for October. It took a few polite phone calls but my latest bill shows a credit for the R218.42.

So You Learnt a Lesson

Welcome. Thanks for the info.

Most of us know to expect this type of crap from telkom, but thanks anyway.:D

Now that you've learnt your telkom lesson:p , cancel, fight to get them to stop deducting the money from your acc. and get yourself a decent ISP.
:D

This is so typical south african mentality. If you order on the 28th and there are 3 days left, of course you are going to have to pay for the full 3gb. I mean think about it. you need bandwidth, you pay for bandwidth, its really that simple.

Everybody always nails telkom, but without them we would not have dsl. yes the rest of the world is way more advanced and telkom is expensive, but the consumer is also to blame in this whole mess.

How on earth can you justify paying pro rata on a fixed cap service? can you image if telkom only charged you 3/31 of the amount then you could use the full three gigs for a fraction of the price.

I think that common sense should prevail in these circumstances. Nobody is forcing you to get DSL in the first place. If you want it, it holds a premium just like any other service.

Does anybody tell you how to run your business? take it or leave it?

the thing is that consumers should also be more reasonable in the circumstances. its not robbery when you apply and you know what the costs are.

I think that these people that moan like this, take emphasis away for real problems like downtime ect.

everybody knows you can't tell telkom how to operate its business. they provide the service, they are in control!

Hi daysleeper

I’d love to have you as a customer. I could rent you a car for a month including 5000 km and after 2 days charge you for another month. After all if you drive for 2 days without stopping you can use the 5000 km.

problem is someone at telkom told him his cap will be reset on the 28th each month, cos he ordered on the 28th, yet that isn't true. He never knew the cap is reset on the 1st of each month because that lady at telkom lied to him.

This is so typical south african mentality.

You display this "typical mentality" you speak of. That is "accept any crp service and be grateful."

You are one of the reason service levels in this country are crp. Complain or I will continue to blame you.

Silly, silly post!!!

Okay, look this is the way it works. ADSL line, yes it will be billed prorata. When you get a new cellphone contract, its also billed prorata, but you get the same division less of free minutes per month.

TelkomInternet 3GB accounts dont get hired over x amount of time like a DSL line. You get 3GB of data that you buy.

Technically what should happen is one of the following.

1) they should give you the 3GB and only bill you for what you have used of the 3GB

2) Set your account reset at the day you buy your account, i.e every 28th of the month.

3) Simply give you only a about 200MB and charge you much less.

If you actually used the 3GB in the last 2 days (like I would do), then obviously you need to pay the full R249

Thanks MrG.
If they had told me how it works I would have paid the R249 and downloaded some movies or I would have bought a Gig elsewhere and used that until the beginning of the month. The complaint was about the misinformation. Telkom to their credit accepted that and reversed the charges. One thing I would not have done is to sit patiently next to my brand new installation and waited for the beginning of the month. Anyway the whole purpose of the post is not to moan but to make newcomers aware of a pitfall.
