What was your first home internet setup?
Not enough time has passed for me to remember this with any amount of nostalgia.
It was a state of the art new computer with an extra 20GB storage capacity. And then the internet......a subscription to xsinet on dialup. It was Winter and I had a lot to do so I think the Telkom bill for that month amounted to about R5000, possibly more. I recall the tone and tune of the dialup and the suspense as you held your breath to find out if you're connected. And then another try, and another......until your nerves fray and you give up or Telkom asks you to come and pay them more money because your bill is excessive for the month.
Family members would hang around or pace because while on the internet or attempting to be on the internet no-one else could make or receive calls and mobile phones were only beginning to be the norm for everyone.
