As you can see in order to get a closer shot I'm either in need of a teleconverter, a new lens, or a boat . . . and I dont think the missus is going to okay a boat or a new lens for that matter.

Anyone have any experience with third party teleconverters like the ones made by Kenko or are the (higher priced) Canon the way to go?

I'm looking to fix a 2x to my f4 (I know - I'll lose AF but I'll live with that) 70-200.

It would seem yet again that local isnt so lekker - the Orms price of r3895.00 doesnt compare very favourably to the r2200.00 BH Photo price.

Does Canon just hate SA or something?

Lol. Well, that is a rather large price difference. Can you not import from B&H rather?

B&H FTW, they are the best. Half the price on many things.
One of the best anyway - certainly in a league above what is presently available here.
You'll also lose two stops of light, if I'm not mistaken. One stop on a 1.4x
Not a problem - will finally be able to get a decent pic of the moon too! :)

Looks like Kenko makes a 3x too . . . .:D

Aaah that woulda been such a nice shot with a new lens/converter! I've heard of a couple of people buying 3rd party stuff and being pretty happy with it.

Wow. With that TC my Sigma will be wide open at f/16 at 300mm  Not exactly it's sweet spot either.

Looks like you don't have to lose autofocus after all... Only on the 1.4x. I've read about this lots of times before but never knew what they were on about. Now I know :)

I wouldnt have lost it anyway on my f4 but from what I've heard even taping the pins doesnt guarantee AF will actually lock on.

Thanks - it would have been. :( I'm going to have to check out the Kenko's I think.

True, I don't see my camera pulling off AF at f/16 unless it happens to be in bright sunlight...

Just for a lark I slapped the 2x TC onto my 70-200 F/4 and was not displeased with the result. AF worked flawlessly.

Taken in camera
finished in post

Very nice - I like the moon in the background. Did you by any chance get one where the moon is in focus?

It AFd at f/8? I thought it could only go to f/5.6? Or did you do the contacts hack?
I'm not hacking anything to do with that lens.

It just worked.

It has a tendency to overexpose so I have to dial it back a stop.

I hear you.

Speaking of prized lenses. I saw a 50mm f/1.0 L in a shop a while back. I still drool just thinking about it. The price tag was a bit out of my range though.
