Telkom’s broadband future

"and is rolled out in AFFLUENT high-density residential areas...."

There.... fixed.

So, nothing new....

agree... has been mooted since around 2010.

You want to replace copper with fibre in the 600 exchanges first - this is Capex (asset growth). There will also be a significant asset write off that will impact your income statement negatively.

Then you want to kill off the 200 exchanges immediately and provide them with a wireless solution (LTE or 3G). This is also Capex with an asset write-off that will impact your income statement. You have an option here of selling off these 200 exchanges to any interested party.

The 1000 exchanges you spend Opex to keep them well maintained. If there is sufficient growth or demand in a very specific area you can move it into the 600 group. Else these exchanges will be replaced once the 600 group is done. You can also roll out LTE and LTE Advanced in some of these areas to provide better broadband services (Capex).

It's not a simple equation of using revenue to improve services as you will also need to take out loans to cover some or much of your Capex.

Yup, and where other Fibre providers have already started or are about to roll out fibre.
The high density urban areas crying out due to poor ADSL infrastructure are ignored.

Getting tired of these useles Telkom articles. Next one better be about cap and/or line speed increases.

Drop the ADSL prices and I'll be happy. Fibre is wishful thinking for now.

“Good old ADSL”, with copper infrastructure from the customer to the exchange, remains a popular service which Telkom uses to provide fixed broadband to customers.
Nothing good about it - SNR too high to go over 4Mbps.

Only popular because of lack of alternatives.

Eish.. Rolls out new things, while others are left out in the cold. Fibre for who(Trevor Noah voice) lol
