Telkom 100Mbps FTTH launch plans

Can you choose your own ISP?

Every ISP has there own licence to lay their own fibre and self provide but now Telkom the only ones laying Fibre and everyone wants to share it and lay their own.

If said PicknPay No Name products should be available to chain stores cause they dontt want to do their own and PicknPay know how to do it. So Woolworths, Spar, Checkers etc should have access to their resources network etc but slap their own sticker on and sell in their stores as there own.

If providers want to self provide as they did and took the matter to court, then self provide not piggy backup on Telkom and cry wolf on their charges etc.

but how else will ISP's continue to rip customers off ? Its so much easier just blaming telkom for high costs

I saw the telkom van in my street this morning hopefully when I get home I'll have free FTTH.

I must say that I happy with the way Telkom is going now days, hope they keep it up.

I really do hope they make FTTH as affordable as possible....now that would be real sweet!

Yeees, the connection will be installed behind the new 70" television they give to all subscribers. They deliver it with your your new Merc GL and..... Beep, beep, beep goes the alarm.

Let's hope they manage to pull it off over the next four years before I return to South Africa. I'm currently in the UK and have fibre from Virgin running at 120Mbps for ÂŁ35 per month. We recently visited family in South Africa and even my wife complained about have to wait for a page to load. Fibre is one of the reasons we are looking at Val de Vie (not that my wife is aware that it is one of the reasons  ).

Not all sunshine and roses on this side though. Before moving to my current house, I got speeds of 2Mbps (lived there for three years), and 800Kbps (one whole year) before that (this is all in London). BT (our own Telkom) refuses to upgrade those exchanges, but in their defence, they are rolling out FTTC to other areas now.

Telkom is not going to solve any of South Africa's telecommunication problems.

When we have a new government next year, they can roll out my plan of a free national fiber network.

You're delusional.

Any government, new or old, has far bigger problems to resolve - unemployment, housing, health, etc...

Still waiting for 10MBPS ADSL. By the time we get this service I am pretty sure mobile providers will have something faster...

Yeah... not gonna happen... (and thats both the new Government(at least for next year), or any government ever rolloing out your plan for a free national fibre network)

Yes, but the problems you list are not solved by talking about them and having pictures taken of politicians kissing poor children. You need money to improve peoples lives. For that you need a strong economy and for that the country needs to be internationally competitive. For that we need good communication infrastructure. Fish and fishing rod, remember?

I can just imagine how much this will cost, like a second mortgage. When we can get European speeds at slightly above European prices then I'll be interested. In some places they get free broadband higher than 100Mbps speeds. There you could get ridiculously fast uncapped broadband with very high upload speeds as well, this often includes TV and phone for less than R1000 per month. Let's compare, Mweb 10Mbps uncapped, DSTV Premium and Phone will cost around R2300 per month. More than double and you get way less.

Unfortunately you are right
The fact that one has had a 4mb line for 5 years now and is getting a lesser speed now than years ago(ave 2.1mbs download as opposed to 3.5mbs years ago) despite the advent of "up to 10mbs", 20mbs and 40mbs and now hooray 100mbs.
Progress, no I haven't seen any - but hey its great news isn't it, just like the up to 10.etc was when it was announced ages ago.

Yes, telkom deal with complaints by saying that the exchange is "conjested" yet they still release all the upgraded services to all the areas that already have 10mb, 20 and 40 etc.

One could bring the "demand" argument into the discussion but it seems pure rubbish. I recall looking at the 40mbs exchanges and do yourself a favor and look at the Plett one, you will see its plum in the middle of where the DA built 1000 toilets in the veld decades ago - demand from that site must be overwhelming

Jesus said, "You will always have the poor with you, but high speed internet? Get it now before Armageddon! Only 99c per day! Operators are standing by. Call 1-800-INTERNET!"

Just got a call from Telkom asking whether their staff can come to my premises this evening to discuss optic fibre installation and its advantages. :D

I would be like "What kind of wine and cheeses do you want when you get here?" :D
