Telkom 10Mbps speed test

Are you connecting to the modem via a LAN cable or via WiFi?

If LAN cable, ensure that it is connected properly, else find another cable!

LAN Cable. I'll have to try with a different cable then.

Different cable and try a different port on the back of the router as well. Also give the router a proper power cycle (disconnected from the power entirely for ten minutes and back on again).

Also request a port reset from Telkom in light of that sync speed and the recent installation.

Ok...I managed to access the modem. Are these the stats you guys need?

Not exactly your line stats but it does show that things aren't so good. Could you maybe look a bit deeper in your router, find your downlink/uplink attenuation and SNR's.

You're only syncing at 5mb, which may be because you're so far from your exchange, or there may be an issue with your line which Telkom can hopefully fix.

My line stats are as follows:
Code:
              Downstream	Upstream
SNR Margin: 6.4 5.8	db
Line Attenuation: 42.0 20.4	db
Data Rate: 10240 984	kbps
Yes I know my values are bad, but I haven't had a problem yet. *touch wood*

Click on the 'Statistics' link on the left once you've clicked on the Status Tab (assuming its not custom Telkom Firmware); this will show you the much needed Attenuation and SNR stats, but I can tell you now that since you're sync'ing at 5Mbps, its probably because you are too far away from the exchange to be able to get the full 10Mbps.

The other issue at hand now is why you are not getting 5Mbps in your speed tests. The latency on those speed tests are a bit high, which could point to an ISP issue or an overloaded/oversubscribed/congested exchange. It could also just be transient and might improve.

Those figures arnt very good, a faulty router could make the stats bad. I recommend you get a router from a friend or member and retest.

Attenuation of 46.5dB is a tad high.
The SNR margins look good, you should be able to squeeze out a bit more. Switch the router off and on, take another look at the stats after it has sync'ed again.

Here's a picture that shows you achievable speed vs attenuation, your router's guesstimate attainable rates seems a bit optimistic:

Ja, the line stats are not amazing, but it even says achievable rate is 8.5mb down and 1mb up. So it should at least be a solid 5mb, not fluctuating which is what seems to be happening.

I agree though, if OP can find a different router just to test on then that could be really beneficial. Failing that, definitely try a free Afrihost account and see if that works better.

A bit better:

Downstream Line Rate (Kbps): 7131
Upstream Line Rate (Kbps): 1019

Thanks for the help guys.
