I am still trying to get our office lines synced at anything higher than 3Mbit. I had to resort to contacting them on Facebook because their call center is just that useless.

The telkom tool seems confused - says what I'm on and max I can get is 4mbps, when I've been on 10mb for the last 6 months..

Oh please - I can't even get a stable 4Mbps connection!
Any suppliers that has VDSL modems in stock?
Another thing is that VDSL router is such a pile of crap. It has all the bell's and whistles with none of the performance. It takes ages to navigate through the menu's and sometimes just decides not to work. You can reset it, restart it, unplug it etc and it will only work when it decides it's time to work. I will always find a solution but this is just the strangest beast I've ever had to struggle with. Once the wi-fi just stopped working completely, it would work perfectly up till the second the router made a connection with the exchange, at that point it would just disappear, as far as the box diagnostics was concerned, the wi-fi was working perfectly. Just the strangest bug I've ever encountered, makes no sense. It finally came back on at 12 am 1st of Feb (there is no scheduling agent to turn wi-fi on/off during certain times btw)
In conclusion, great product (totally out of my price range though) if you can source a different router.
Seems Telkom like adding lots of features, but don't really like making it easy to use, stable or checking important features are included. Thinking of those Marconis as a great example, VPN, but no Dyndns??? Stability, what is that?
Something I noticed on http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl - you can see what anyone is rocking. If anyone puts my number in it will spit out what type of ADSL line speed I am using. Seems like a slight violation in privacy to me. Dominic if you are on this thread any line on this?
Tried two of my numbers. Both are wrong![]()
I am trying to get our 2 ADSL lines sorted out at our office in Table View, Cape Town.
When we had the lines installed there were a shortage of ports available and we were connected to a DSLAM that is too far away for us to achieve any speeds higher than 3Mbit.
However Telkom has just recently installed 3 brand new MSANs in our area, one of them is about 100m around the corner from our office.
I am trying to find out if we can get our lines moved to ports on the new MSAN, but it is impossible to convey this to any call center consultant and I keep being transferred to a different person.
The two telephone numbers for our lines are:
021 556 51xx
021 556 58xx
I have enquired about these exchanges you referred to. The feedback received was as follows. The MSAN that you are referring to does not run from your lines. You will have to wait until June when the Tableview exchange will be cut over to the MSAN. These MSAN`S are not commissioned yet and we will not be able to divert these lines to the MSAN the you are is referring to. Thank you ^NC
The line rental prices are totally bogus, and made up IMO.
You will spend more on data in any case, so a flat-rate ADSL line rental, independent of speed would make more sense.
All they are doing is making it artificially expensive to have higher speeds.
They should be making money off value added services, not the basic access to those services.
I actually just received some information regarding the MSANs in our area from the Telkom Facebook page.
My query:
Telkom Reply:
Only JuneAt least I have an answer, felt like slitting my wrists after trying to get this info from the call center.
You do know that the ADSL exchanges don't have infinite backhaul right? The faster speed you want, the more backhaul they need to install. Or did you think the data got from TPB to your PC magically?
What is your labour legislation like in GermanyThey still make good money, so why is SA so expensive?
Do we design and build our own equipment? No,
SA buy and use the same network equipment Europe does.
