Hi

I managed to flash my Vodacom 3G dongle to work with Telkom.

Here is the speed test I did a few minutes ago.

yip, great speed, I only manage 2500 - 2800kbps in constant tests, with +-800-1000kbps uploads, and 150-180ms pings.... still grrrreat speeds, compared to VC and MTN with same signal strenght.
of course... the real test will be to see how long Telkom can keep it up, and even improve on that

the woman at Telkom shop said she wasn't sure if the telkom sim would work with Voda or MTN E220, but both worked straight away, just put the simcard, and started the voda or MTN proggie, or the MDMA Ginggs proggie, no prob.

yea but I think telkom supports 7.2Mbps so it might be worth the frimware upgrade.

"Telkom brings you the latest HSDPA and HSUPA wireless network, the network supports devices able of 7.2Mbps high-speed downlink packet access and 2.4Mbps high-speed uplink packet access."

yeah, maybe worthwile checking the firmware out...
I also use the new Huawei B970 modem/router with Telkom sim, no changes to mtn firmware or software... I can see I get HSPA service, especially with upload speeds. Will see if I can get >3600kbps where I can find better signal (mine only 3bars on MTN dashboard)

Need to still be able to use the modem with Voda/MTN sim, in the places there's still no Telkom coverage

I don't think it should be a problem on the Telkom firmware. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks, can you confirm if this firmware works fine on Vodacom/MTN?

No idea, sorry. I am sure it will be fine though. The one thing where it might be a problem is if you are using a 64k MTN SIM. The E220 firmware from MTN specifically adds support for their 64k SIM and breaks it for others.

Here is my speedtest result: My signal strength is only about 2 bars out of 10.

Yes works fine

Bought a E220 from Telkom (R1268) and used a Vodacom Sim yesterday - connected perfectly without any action beyond physically connecting the E220 to the PC - same firmware. Have not done a speed test yet but downloaded Opera USB browser at over 200KBs so happy enough with the speed.

Now we just need larger data packages at the same price ;)

Thanks, would love to give it a bash when they go prepaid. Anyone know when they will go prepaid?
