Hi there all.

I am currently setting up an organised anti-telkom activist group. The idea of the active activist group is through non-violent means (protests, websites, marches, whateva), bring the media`s and publics attention to telkom stranglehold on this country.

I think an organised well structured group could achieve this goal.

So if you want to actually do something about it. Please email me at [email protected]

I am urgently looking for the following volunteers:

1) Website Admins (Pref. with CMS or Wiki Experience)
2) Journalists
3) Anyone who would like to become a part of this. If you can spare information, time, skills or money. We would greatly appreatiate it.

Look forward to hearing from you

dont any of you see THAT DOESNT WORK
lets get serious huh?

Well Karnaugh, while you wrestle with your ethical dilemma's, why not try and do something to help?

What the hell is wrong with you people?

Listen, if you don't want to get involved, that's fine. Stay out of it. But there is no need to demote those people who are trying to make a difference. A couple of people around here who adopt this defeatist attitude of, "you not going to change anything so why try?" are the same people that have no idea about the kinds of efforts underway to change this situation.

There are a number of people in SA who are putting themselves on the line in order to try make a difference. And trust me, you actually dont have a clue what is being done. Saying things like "it doesnt work" is disrespectful to those people who are out there taking the initiative. Why are you even hanging around MyAdsl? To sit here and moan about things, whilst not having the guts or the courage to get out there and do something?

You people will argue, "but it's my opinion" - and yes, you are correct, it is your opinion. The problem is that your opinion has negative, demotivational effects. Expressing opinions like this which are wholly unconstructive actually do leave our fight WORSE OFF than if you just hadnt said anything at all.

The next thing I want to point out is is that what is being proposed here is something entirely different to hellkom.co.za. Hellkom, as Vio correctly points out, is more of a consumer-information site which may encourage a limited amount of activism, but is by and large used for informative purposes only.

Skrewball, you contend that this "oesnt work" - could you please give me an example of a grassroots telecommunications reformation group that has failed? In fact, can you please give me ANY example of a formally organised grassroots telecommunications group pushing for liberalisation? You cannot, because there are none (MyAdsl cannot even be considered in this category). How can you then say that this doesnt work? On what are you basing this statement?

Incidently, Peapod suggests a similar idea, and she gets a raving, supportive response. Pan's suggestion is met with negativity in abundence! Go figure!!

Quite true.. I'm supportive of anyone who tries to do something to change things in this banana republic. I must be honest, I'm DYING to march.. being a white south african, that's saying something :p So, if there are any marches organised in Cape Town, count me IN!! :D

I'll do some graphics no prob !

I'm a web designer by trade, so if you need me to knock together some templates PAN, drop me a line ! - I'll PM ya.

yea i didnt mean for my message to come off as negative towards what pan posted, i'll stick behind any 1 here against telkom\dep of comunications. was just trying to point out that im tired of that non violence bs... *cof*ivy*cof*

and debbie, if i am ever negative, that is my opinion, not every 1 can be as enthusiastic with having to fight telkom\gov, that fights been going on for to long and some of us are just tired (btw, your doing a good job at the front line:P)

I'll repeat what I just said in another thread :-

The only things that can be done already are - just educate people as to how Telkom are screwing us over.

Heck, after years of virtual silence from people, things are at last starting to happen.
Just getting ICASA to the table over ADSL was a major step forward.
The current president (if you can call him that) indicated our prices are way too high.
It's been on the front page of newspapers, on TV and radio
ISP's are all getting active behind the scenes forcing Telkom to let go of thier grip on access.

This all happened overseas in the UK (and other countries) and eventually the ISP's and consumers won - it took 4 or 5 years for the UK to get where they are now - google it and you'll see - before thier ADSL explosion, BT was a monopoly every bit as ugly and agressive as Telkom, if not more so !

i only hope i live long enough to c the stranglehold on telecommunication in ZA broken!!!!!!!!!!

Skrewball, I apologise if what I said earlier is perceived as an outlash or aggressive in any way. It's not my intention. :) Though it does make me angry because there are people that have put themselves out in a big way, at significant financial cost, trying to make a difference on behalf of all South Africans. Look at MaD, the oke's getting sued for millions....can you imagine how terrible it must be to hear that some dont support him? I cant understand it. If only South Africans would realise that they are creating self-fufilling prophecies.

I think the way I look at it is like this - people on MyAdsl who sit here and moan that nothing is going to change are like people who join churches and then proceed to argue that G0d doesnt exist.

The fact is that things won't change if we don't organise and MAKE them change. There is no harm in trying. There is, on the other hand, a great deal of harm caused by persisting negative attitudes.

Expressing opinions like this which are wholly unconstructive actually do leave our fight WORSE OFF than if you just hadnt said anything at all.

Well its my *personal opinion* that this continuous, mindless mud slinging at Telkom is highly unconstructive, and just basically an immature and highly misinformed approach.

just educate people as to how Telkom are screwing us over.
I would agree with that - educate people that Telkom are screwing us over (they are), but to do so carefully without simply insulting Telkom takes tact and knowledge of the inherent complications - which most of these websites blatantly lack.

If you're going to make websites with big public statements, think about what you're saying and the consequences.

Now I will keep quiet, and no longer give my opinion on this issue.

Aaaag lol karnaugh, lol.

Little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as my old man always says.

Anyway - LOL.
