Telkom ADSL: ISP pricing comparison

Those comparisons really don't make sense.

Nothing wrong with the comparison.Just shows how competitive they actually are now on the smaller packages.
Got to give credit to Pinky.

Wish we could see competitive offerings in the 50GB range.

So what does Telkom have next in the pipeline?

Still too expensive.
The day i'll put ADSL is when 1mb/2mb uncapped is under R300.00 with the bloody line rental included.

The only pricing that really matters is the ADSL and Line rental. The low per gig rates mean nothing when the basic cost of the service is still so stupidly high.

Fair enough with above comments wrt line rental but who would've thought Telkom Internet has become favourable now after many years. A very good move on Ti's part and a sign of more things on its way.

TK Business ADSL Uncapped pricing leaked but i want to see the consumer prices leaked now :D

+1 TK

Telkom Internet has been the cheapest option for years and years. Work the numbers and you'll see that there are a few stretches where one or two companies were better, but not much.

But as usual, what isn't on Telkom Internet's pamphlets is ignored completely. Telkom Internet offers local only data on several (all?) of it's packages, but this is just ignored, the same way that them giving 4.5 GB on their 3 GB packages was ignored in comparisons 2 or 3 years ago.

It's not like I have nothing to complain about regarding Telkom Internet, but their pricing HAS ALWAYS BEEN competitive, if you want better, don't ask the pricing leader, ask the laggards like IS to catch a wakeup.

Also RPM, please, please, please start differentiating between Telkom Internet (the ISP) and Telkom (the fixed line provider). I think people will start looking at things differently when they realise that Telkom is a monopoly (through no fault of their own - ISPs have had the right to build their own, better, local loop for years now, and NONE has) offering bad prices on ADSL lines, while Telkom Internet offers very competitive pricing in a fairly competitive market. I can't call the consumer ADSL ISP market competitive when there are only 4 players (SAIX, IS, WA and MWeb).

Useful comparisons. Thanks rpm. I still won't use TI, never will. As soon as they gain a decent foothold in the market, they will kill off the competition through uncompetitive means and their usual bullying tactics, stop reducing pricing on their own products, and we'll be back to square one.

Boycott Telkom Internet. They don't deserve our business. Rather support companies like Afrihost, MWEB, WebAfrica, Axxess, etc. The only reason they are responding now, is due to competition, who are making them look like idiots with no business sense, which they are. Telkom would NEVER give something back to the consumer out of its own good will, no matter how loyal you are. Just ask all those still waiting for 2 years and counting for them to release uncapped, and respond to price reductions in the market.

Stay away!

I use around 150 gigs a month on a 1 meg line. Please inform me how I can can get a similar service through Telkom. I am always looking for a better deal ;)

Well, for the past two months, any TI account would do. ;):D

I only care about my needs, so your puny 1 meg line is of no interest to me. I need my 8Mbps.

MWeb uncapped 10240kbps incl ADSL line = R 2359

Telkom Do3 + 8 x 16 Gigs = R 2466

I'd pay the extra 4.5% for the improved reliability and speeds.

Next question.

Edit: Of course this excludes the 270 gigs of local data that you'll get.

Aaaah, I see. Internet logic. I should have known that your broad sweeping statements only apply to your specific needs. My bad.

How else can one do it? Maybe give an example?

I simply felt the pricing was too far apart due to the variety of services each give as value added.

My two issues that skewed the table were:
WebAfrica had inflated pricing due to their Off Peak data.
TelkomInternet's local cap portions was not mentioned in brackets.

The chart accurately shows TelkomInternet and the rest of the ISPs value in the first 1GB block, however moivng upwards it becomes more and more out of line.

WebAfrica R899 for 15GB (75GB Off Peak) - Where did that package come from? Why 75GB for the comparison? TelkomInternet at that level is 16GB + 30GB.

if u dont know wht to say shut up dude. we old enough to make up our own minds...

I do 74 gigs of data every month (previously 64 gigs), except when Telkom Internet's capping breaks, in which case I do a lot more. For this, I've got a Do3 package and an 8 gig package costing R 703 total. I need 8Mbps and I need reliability. If you can get away with a slow ass line, good for you, but I can't, and I can't sit without internet for days at a time because Seacom broke. My time means a lot to me, so waiting while a website loads or an application downloads is not an option.

Edit: 150 gigs on a 1Mbps line means full line speed for half the month. How long before you get booted for abuse?

My opinion on this, um, debate going on here....

TelkomInternet has a very good deal in a doBroadband bundle. R108 for a 8GB(20GB) account is really not bad. Annoying thing is the local being usable only after the cap for blended being reached. Unlike WebAfrica where you can access your high end cap after hours (off peak) or late at night.

It is important to also take into account if the line is being used for a home business or personal use.

I myself just moved out of home for the first time and am running a 1Mbps connection for personal use. The reason? 3 Month Free Trial and afterwards I can't justify spending the extra R200 - R300 a month to get the doLevel 3 considering I can grab everything I already do with a 1Mbps overnight or while I am at work during the day. I am use to being on a 4Mbps line, but honestly do not miss the speed that much.

The closest competitor for me would be the WebAfrica Home Connect product (for my purposes).

Seacom is no longer a problem considering most of the providers have backups in place for that.

In the end it is personal preference and usage styles.

R79 for one gig - in 2011? Yeah Telkom is about 3 times -less- competitive just on that one.

1GB + 10GB Local - R79.

However it seems as if it is priced to push the user not to take it and rather go for the R99 4GB + 10GB Local.

Telkom r so stupid :wtf:. Why not hook the entry level users with competitive entry level offerings and then let them decide if they want to go for better options later on.
