Actually worse, only smaller providers think in terms of singular paths.

Larger ones have multiple diverse routes across which they balance their traffic to ensure there's no single point of failure. The greater Internet is a fluid environment so traffic loads on any particular link will fluctuate as circumstances change.

Therefore quoting contention ratios beyond the access layer is pretty pointless.

So where does the IPC link come into play?

Is IPC just a connection to get access to Telkom's ADSL cloud?

If so, then I suppose there is contention at this level as well? E.g. an ISP gets a 155mbps IPC link into Telkom's ADSL cloud, but could oversell this to its subscribers to make up for a better return, right?

Then we also have the ISPs network which needs to be have access to local and international bandwith, another 2 areas where contention ratios come into play. For e.g. - buying a 155mbps pipe on Seacom, and another 155mbps pipe on national routes?

IPC comes into play when Telkom etc provides internet bandwidth to smaller ISP's.

No, do not think of ADSL as a cloud although you see it drawn like that. ADSL is merely a subscriber access technology, point-to-point links.

Let's drop the adsl word and instead substitute it with ip bandwidth. Yes, isp's can oversell their bandwidth to whatever degree they see fit. Some might blow a golf ball through a hosepipe while others will try and blow the same golf ball through a straw, obviously the straw is going to take longer

I do not have any information on the local vs international scenario but common sense tells me economics of scale are at play here and it would be possible to provide better contention ratios for local vs international. Another thing to look at is where is the majority of content hosted, it's not SA so most traffic (for me anyway) has international origins.

Some interesting info coming out of this thread

Maybe some of the guys with good knowledge of the Telkom (or any other big ISPs) network could do a little write up and we can put it in the MyAdsl news section so that everyone else gets a better understanding of it? Hell, I'd even chip in a couple of six packs for some well written explanations

That would be great. It could discuss how contention ratios work, which ISPs have their own IPC pipes, and their own networks, which ISPs are simply resellers, and if so, resellers of which company, as well as who each company's upstream providers are (for both local and international bandwidth).

I hope Staff Writer is reading this. It'll give him something to do on those slow news days when we all get to read how great broadband is in the rest of the world.

Don't think of it as documentation... think of it as.. err... story telling Hehehehe! Your descriptions earlier were great! But either way - diagrams would be epic too
