Telkom ADSL price increase warning

Might have been interesting to see the 'all in' price. Which includes voice line + adsl line + internet subscription cost. I think with ISP's dropping prices, the total cost of internet has decreased over the years?

You just gotta love telkom.

The only plan B they have is to charge more. ADSL subscribers dwindling ? NO PROBLEM, hike prices. In the last 5 years ADSL has only become slower and more unstable.

Last 5 years it's become slower? ADSL lines are being bumped up in speed for everyone eligible except the "up to 10Mb" which were rolled out in 2010 I belive... funny definition of "slower" you have there.

Really!?

Where have this guy been living? Mars? Because when I last checked we had a thing called "inflation" that causes prices to rise yearly... and if you look at it from the providers side, they are actually getting "less" money value every year. So on Telkom's books they are already "loosing" money by just keeping the prices the same for so many years.

And a R10 increase to go from 384Kbps to 1Mbps is like a damn good special! Or ages ago you had to pay lets say R330 for a 1Mb, then they upgraded to 2Mb, 4Mb, 6Mb, 10Mb, 12Mb and now going for 20Mb (or 40?) and still only charge you R330 for that!

The only thing that actually beats inflation is IT technology, that is why you can buy "more" Laptop/Cellphone for "less" money every year. Why? Because they figure ways out to build things for less money/energy constantly.

But the repairs and copper or plastic that goes into infrastructure gets more expensive every year. So Telkom is doing a great job, to give us "more" for the same money.

Why don't you phone your insurance company and ask them to insure your BMW for the price of a City Golf? Or ask your Medical Fund to upgrade you to their comprehensive plan, for the same monthly fee as you are paying now... the operators will laugh uncontrollably!

I'm talking about the fastest offering they have. Sub 400KB/sec download speed, in this day & age that is a joke. Anything slower than telkom's fastest offering is semantics, and in fact the only thing it has achieved is congest the hell out of many many exchanges that were operating just fine before the 1 and 2 mbps upgrades.

The fact is that their residential access network, and the backhaul connecting it all together is borderline obsolete.

Telkom's problem is the high number of staff, I/3 of their cost goes to employee cost and that cost keeps on going every year, government as a major shareholder won't allow Telkom to retrench at least 1/3 (around 7 000) of their employees.

if (I say if) Telkom can be allowed to remove dead wood among it's stuff it can be leaner and more efficient to run which in turn can translate into price cuts on it's products

I'm sure you could lead by example.

Maybe its necessary, but think about other people and their lives before making comments like that.

To the people calling bs on this, its not about what you can get from dsl, we all know most people on MBB have access to some sort of fixed line access, this article's most important paragraph IMH:

According to World Wide Worx, Telkom can argue that it is currently migrating ADSL users to higher speeds at the same price, but this does not address lack of access.

So who cares if your able to get super fast dsl, and nice bandwidth and Fttx, most people in SA cant. We should really stop thinking only about ourselves...

Sorry, but your wrong:

I was on 4mbps, than got degraded to 2.1mbps, now i'm chucking along at 1mbps.

I think that would define slower btw..

Think hard about that statement. If it's necessary, then those people need to find other jobs. What's necessary must be done, simple.

A job is a privilege, not a right. This country is messed up because companies like Telkom are forced to hold onto people who are absolutely useless.

All the network operators contribute to the USAF, which is meant to cater for the "non-profitable" areas. From a business perspective it is suicide to promise universal access.

Yeah, hope you enjoy your super fast broadband at the expense of people's jobs :P must feel great downloading that pirated content or streaming video while other people stress up and have a hard time.

And no, you getting better broadband won't help create more jobs in our economy, its all about everyone getting better broadband.

Well, at least we can all agree upon the fact that even if you retrench more people, it wont help a bit, all that extra money will just line the politician pockets and management of telkom.

that is my experience... had 4Mb originally, then got upgraded to the best speed possible of 6Mb but now I am down to 3Mb and its deteriorating fast. so yea... I wish I could get ADSL from another company... :(

Gotta love these pointless Telkom articles :D

It's like throwing a bleeding seal carcass amongst a pack of Great Whites on this forum.

BTW the new reply format is step backwards in my opinion (full screen on firefox).

Yeah I wasn't' referring to rural areas, that would be suicide.

But most urban areas can't even get proper dsl, I know, I live in the middle of midrand, and its extremely bad here.
In fact my neighbor applied for dsl and got denied because their infrastructure cant handle it...

Just saying, its stuff like this that isn't helping telkom.

Communications Minister Dina Pule recently said that Telkom’s fate will be decided at the ANC’s electoral conference in Mangaung

Doubt it. The only thing the ANC will be deciding there is who has the longest schlong - and Dina Pule is severely lacking in that department.
