Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

Funny story, a similair thing is probably about to happen to me. Im still waiting for the technician to come and "install" my line. I got fed up with waiting, they said "maybe today", so I plugged everything in and setup my wireless network. My modem said I had connectivity to the dsl network, so I bought the webafrica prepaid account, and now im online. When the technician comes to install the line I can tell him thanks but no thanks. Unfortunately they still gonna charge me over R400 installation charge I bet.

I wonder if I tell them not to send the technician now, will they still charge me?

It's worth taking a chance - tell them you have self-installed and that you do not need a techie to come out, you also don't need to be charged ~R430 for installing your own ADSL modem|router.

Just a qn but wouldn't this thread be better suited as a sticky in General ADSL discussions? Not really news anymore, is it?

Morning Bwana :)

I have reported your request via the Report Bad Post feature, but have left the thread where it is as the move would need to encompass the change in the link from the News Article as well which I cannot do.

Have a great day.

Thanks :) I dont like using the Report Bad Post feature as I'm never quite sure what the effect is. (I envisage a bat signal in the sky with one flashing red phone going off in rpm's office and another in the bot cave  )

Have a good one too.

@Bwana

Thanks for the screen shots. :)
Noted.

Mods have requested the excess posts be deleted to keep the thread on topic.
We can pick up on the Card System later this week when RPM makes the appropriate announcements.

Cheers :)

So the telkom techie phoned to say he was coming, I told him not to worry I have already installed it, he said he has to come. So he did - walked in, made a phone call to to telkom to "test the line speed" for 3 mins, which was working fine for 4 days already, and then he made me sign that piece of paper and walked out. R430 for what?

Why did you sign? - I wouldn't even have let the techie in.

Okay so I phoned Telkom and asked how I would go about doing the self-installation option. The lady said that you can only do it if previous clients have had ADSL installed at your location before, or you had ADSL installed previously. So you must of moved into a place which previously had an ADSL line installed and has all the correct wiring etc. If you are having a brand new ADSL installation, then you can't do the self-installation.

Does this sound right?

No, sounds like BS. I ordered my ADSL line months ago, and last week when I did my weekly follow up, I got the "technician wil be there next week" spiel. Anyway, I told her I want to opt for the self install, which the Telkom rep promised me won't be an issue. They will phone me to let me know when I can install. I got a call this week, and everything seems to be working now. I have to pay R245.80 for the installation though  , even though I did it myself
